Diff Locks?

Several people on here have asked the suppliers this question and they always come back and say you can't fit an auto-locker to a manual Prado. I can't say they have ever given a good explanation but they are quite certain.Originally posted by PLAYDOH View PostAre you saying Auto lockers aren't available for manual transmission Prados?
Auto lockers can be used in manual transmission 4WD's, a automatic does not make an autolocker any more suitable than a manual either.

Interesting...??Originally posted by Trekrider View PostSeveral people on here have asked the suppliers this question and they always come back and say you can't fit an auto-locker to a manual Prado.
Example, I've thought about how they would go in the Prado, I don't want to fit one, would rather save for some Eaton E-lockers. But I did notice in magazines and online that for the rear there is one available for "most". Does this have to do with different gear ratio's I didn't think it mattered?

But, then on their customer feedback page there are Toyota Prado customers who have given feedback.. If it's real or not who knows.

I am running a Lock Right locker(similar principle, mechanical auto-locker, but from the US) in the rear of my 2007 D4D manual and I am quite happy with it.Originally posted by Trekrider View PostSeveral people on here have asked the suppliers this question and they always come back and say you can't fit an auto-locker to a manual Prado. So obviously you can fit it to a manual and it is not falling apart ;-)

I suspect they aren't recommended for manuals because they (the lokkas) might not stand up well to shock load. Either that or the combined effect of sudden power from the manual transmission and the diff locking might place damaging shock load on the crown wheel and pinion gears, the Achilles heel of most Toyota 4wds.Originally posted by PLAYDOH View PostAre you saying Auto lockers aren't available for manual transmission Prados?

Yes, there would be nothing stopping you from fitting one to a manual if you really wanted as the diff centres are the same between manual and auto models.Originally posted by groeschel View PostI am running a Lock Right locker(similar principle, mechanical auto-locker, but from the US) in the rear of my 2007 D4D manual and I am quite happy with it.

Its not falling apart for Michael... yet. 4wdsystems are in it to make money so there is obviously a good reason that they don't want people to use their lokkas in vehicles with a manual transmission.Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

And they do offer a '3 Year Unconditional Warranty' so, as you say, they must have a reason.Originally posted by williade View Post4wdsystems are in it to make money so there is obviously a good reason that they don't want people to use their lokkas in vehicles with a manual transmission.

I don't think that is the reason, if they are selling them for other Land-cruisers, Patrol's, and a large majority of other large 4WD's for both the front and rear diffs.Originally posted by williade View PostI suspect they aren't recommended for manuals because they (the lokkas) might not stand up well to shock load.09 D4D Prado - Toyota issue White

With significantly larger diff centres and for all I know, they may not want you use them in Manual Patrols or Cruisers either.Originally posted by PLAYDOH View PostLand-cruisers, Patrol's, and a large majority of other large 4WD's for both the front and rear diffs.Declan: 1997 GXL 4.5 Auto 80 series on LPG, ARB bullbar, 2" OME lift, 32" MTZ, GME UHF, rear ARB locker, Kaymar spare wheel carrier

I wasn't to sure on these to start with so I bought one over to have a look and test it out. When it arrived I was very impressed with the cnc machined unit. I installed it into my car to make sure they could handle Aussie conditions. Now I have had it in the car for around 5 months and used it plenty of times and it has never let me down. The tyre inflation kit is abit of a joke but the actual compressor is quite good.
I can do the kits for $900 delivered so imo they are worth a look.
Check my website for pics and i look forward to hearing your opinions and answering any questions.
hi there,
do you have some more experience with this air-lockers you imported?
Any other takers/references, long term experience, limitations?
Any info appreciated.
Cheers
Michael
