  • Unexplained winding down noise when bought to a stop in soft sand...???

I was recently in Beachport when the sand dune urge got too much to handle. I am driving a V6 120 series and on three separate occasions while trying to reach the top of a tough sand dune we came to a stop and I could hear what sounded like a winding down noise that went for a couple of seconds. The car was in HL so I am hoping that the noise is quite normal and something to do with the transmission. Any advice? Has anyone else heard the same noise? I would really like to know what I was listening to! Thx

    Was the engine still running?

Did you try low 4? If you thought you could get up in HIGH range then I would have left it in HIGH and not in HIGH LOCKED. If you couldn't get up after one or 2 tries then I would have gone the LOW range option 2nd gear with attention to momentum. Tyre pressures reduced I'm assuming. Noise could be drivetrain strain if you were pushing a little too hard, but more likely may have been a wheel spinning to a halt in the sand a few seconds after the car became immobile.
