  • Annoying engine noise and clunking noise

Hey guys I have two issue and hoping someone might know!

1st issue is when I'm in 5th gear and put my foot down and it goes back to 4th it clunks really bad! It only started after 4 wheeling and some creek crossings. I've checked everywhere and can't find it. Seems to be getting louder and harder to.

2nd issue is when traveling next to a concrete wall or another car etc I can hear what sounds like a muffler hole but isn't as I've had it checked. It's like a ticking kind of noise! Thought it might be the fuel input in but have filled it again and nothing it's really annoying as it sounds terrible when your driving along.

Any help would be appreciated 😃

Hi there Paddy, not sure on the first issue rough guess would be possibly the shafts need a greasing, might be binding up a bit. I also have the 5 speed auto I would have to say is very very smooth BUT some times there is a very very slight wouldnt even call it a thump more like backlash in the diff when it drops back but as said is very very minimal and only does it at rare moments not some thing I worry about but yours sounds like it needs to be rectified very soon to be sure that no damage is been done.
The other noise is exhaust 100%. This is extremely common on the 4L some louder then others. My mate has 06 VX and is louder then my 05 and yes is very noticable when travelling next to say a concrete barrier and louder if slowly putting the power on. Dont worry about that in the slightest 100% common. I call it a standard feature of the 120 V6's of all ages. They did a slight mod (so Toyota told me ??) in late 04 when the 5 speed auto come out but is a load of crap if you ask me as I said my mates 06 is louder then mine. Just turn turn the radio up and keep away from the barriers lol.........Other then a few odd things there a great motor/4wd.........Cheers Steve

      Thanks Steve

Yeah the noise is annoying and I'm glad to hear it isn't just mine! Can it be fixed?
Yeah I greased everything thinking that would help the auto but obviously not helping I'm so sure it's something to do with the tail shaft but can't pin it! Maybe off to Toyota or ARB next week for a nice big bill 😢

Not sure wether if adding an aftermarket exhaust would fix it but this would require headers/extractors to be fitted to eliminate the problem. Personally I wouldnt touch it and just leave it. It doesnt affect the running of it, they arent leaking or anything its just the design that causes the sound. Up to you but I wouldnt be paying at a rough guess in excess of $1000 to eliminate what nearly sounds like injectors pulsing. Up to you at the end of the day but as mentioned before Id just turn the radio up and enjoy..Cheers Steve

Had it looked at today and apparently it's the torque converter! I'm not that good with this stuff but apparently when it is engaging the mechanisms are glazed over causing them to rub before engaging? Something along those lines but they have to take the gear box out to fix it at a cost of $1500!!!!!😭😭😭😭
It's a common problem apparently but the gear box themselves are really good! He did say the old 4 speeds had a better ear box though than the 5 but they are still very strong
