Squeeling noise when clutch is being let out.

Hey guys,
I can hear a squeeling noise when I release the clutch.
I have no idea what it might be, I did google it and it says something about TOB, no idea what that is either.
Anyone have any idea?

Could be a number of things, depending on when exactly you hear the noise.

If you hear the noise anytime there is pressure on the clutch pedal, it is most likely the throw-out bearing (what your previous search called the TOB). It is a large bearing that pushes onto the fingers that disengage the clutch plate.

If you only hear the noise when the clutch is completely disengaged it is probably the centre bearing in the flywheel that aligns the front shaft of the gearbox into the flywheel.

If you hear the noise as you are lifting your foot off the clutch pedal and as the clutch starts to bite, then it is most likely that your clutch plate is worn.

Regardless of the cause, the amount of work needed to fix is very similar. I've never worked on a Prado's clutch, but have done quite a few Holdens & Mazdas of various ages. The main time-consuming part of the job is that the gearbox has to come out. Once that is done, the rest of the work is quick & easy. I'm not sure how much the bearings for the Prado cost, but when I've done them on Holdens & Mazda's they were quite cheap, so whenever I changed clutch plates, I replaced both the throw-out bearing and the centre bearing at the same time as a precaution. A few dollars for replacement bearings is negligible compared to the time/labour involved in dropping the gearbox.

Is the Prado a dog to work on? Like I said before I haven't done a clutch on a Prado, but on the cars I have done, the job was knocked over in 4-5 hours, and you'd have change from $150 after buying the clutch plate & bearings.

Rang the dealer I bought the car off and he said they will look at it free of charge and if its covered under warranty, (throw out bearing is) they will do the work, and if its something else they will ask to do the work if not covered by warranty...

The car is a 2007 GX 120 prado with 145,000 odd kms on it and its 6 speed...

The sound only started after I got the recent service done...

make sure you ask the about the throwout bearing issue, as even if they replace the bearing the noise will come back, only when its out of warranty. . Trust me, been there. . There is an update, even if you buy it and they put it in if thats what they do, you wont regret it....

As said above new clutch. I got a excedy clutch in mine for 287 but that's trade price. Normal price is 500 mark. Few beers and a BBQ to keep mates there to help and it's done in a weekend mate

So drove an hour this morning to be at the dealership by 0730 so they can diagnose the noise, was told it would take an hour max to check it out. Hour and half passes, car ready mate, I'll go check... 15mins mate, ok no worries... Half hour passes, mate u said 15mins, ok i'll go check again, 20mins later rocks up with the car, all good mate u can take it... U serious buddy, are u gunna tell me whats wrong with it??? Oh yeh... ummmm the TOB is about to go.... WELL DERRRRR!!!! Let me speak to ur manager please... ummm ok.

Long story short it is going to be covered by warranty... YAY!

But how stupid can some people be... WHO THE HELL EMPLOYS THESE DUMB ARSES!!!

You'll be back to have it fixed again in the future if you keep your Prado. Toyota know there is a issue but just change out the thrust bearing and hope you don't come back. Doing the mod is the only long term solution to fix this issue it's also well documented in the US with the Tacoma and FJ cruiser which have the same drive line. I did the mod a while back and can say it was money well spent with no further issues with the thrust bearing .

The bottom line of your post sums it up...but you have to ask yourself why are you taking it back to them !

The only problem is I dont have the money at the moment to get a new clutch system...
