    Re: Diff Breathers

    Thanks Waltec
The Billet Race craft Quad kit is double in price of the Carnage which is why I asked the question, but if you are saying it is worth it I'll go for it as well. I also like the looks of it

      Re: Diff Breathers

      Gday guys,

Currently looking at extending all four breathers. I'vew sourced filter/silencers and can pick up the unions I need through Toyota Dealership. I've got no worries locating front, rear and transfer case breathers BUT I'm struggling to find the Transmission breather. And yes mine is an auto.

I've used ToyoDIY.com as a reference and have found the two caps (35104B No. 1 and No. 2) but can't find them on my vehicle.

I've also looked through this thread and founf LFaR's post which shows all of the breathers, but they are removed:

Havn't been able to see anything that looks like the Transmission breather.

I've tried hugging the undercarriage for the last two hours as well as poking my head in as far to the rear of the engine bay as possible. Just wondering if someone has a photo or few of the location of the auto trans breather and how to access it. I havn't removed the sump "bash" plate as yet but might have to.

EDIT: Finally found it. on the drivers side of the transmission. I guess I was expecting to see it sitting out somewhere since I saw LFaRs post and the length.

        Re: Diff Breathers

My hunting for the breathers has resulted in the following images:

NB: These apply to a April 2006 TD 120 GXL

        Front Breather in Engine Bay
The breather cap just pulls off with a little wriggle and leaves a 1/4" hose.

Rear Breather on Passanger side of Rear Diff

14mm spanner fits nice and snug. Make sure you wipe away any crap BEFORE removing the breather as you will getb that same crap in the diff oil. A union will be required. Tried to work out the thread size and pitch but I was unable to discover this but it seems there are a number of union options available from Toyota to suit:

Raised Differential Breathers Pre 05 Hilux
How to install a rear differential breather extension
        Rear Differential Breather Mod
Seems that the appropriate part number is Toyota Part Number 9040451026. I found a fitting that I have that does screw in so I will confirm the size but it's not a standard metric thread.

The hose size for this union or alternatives from Pirtek, Enzed,etc... would be 1/4"

        Auto Transmission Breather
Head in this direction on the drivers side of the vehicle. You need to reach up between the exhaust and the transmission but will be working blind

The breather looks like this when it is fixed in place

There are two clamps holding this in place. A 1/4" hose will fit onto the existing plastic/nylon fiting once the bottom clamp is opened and the existing breather tube is removed

        Transfer Case Breather
This breather is located on the passanger side just up behind a blue electrical/sensor connection

Doesn't look like it is held on with anything significant. Should easily disconnect and allow for a 1/8" hose to connect. Would be worth while either hooking into the rear diff hose OR putting a short 1/8" hose followed by a 1/8" to 1/4" male/male joiner and running through into either the engine bay or up near the fuel filler neck.

Hope to get this all done in a few weeks time. Should be a bit of fun.

          Re: Diff Breathers

Going to be picking a set of the Billet Race Craft QUAD breathers on ebay shortly.
Will be fitting them when i get home again in 2 weeks.

Hopefully get some photos, not sure if anything hasn't actually been covered yet though!

Either way, should be good fun to install by the sounds of it...

            Re: Diff Breathers

Fitting my breathers has been delayed slightly but I bagged a bonus this morning. I'm going down the build it yourself route and checked out a placed called Adelaide Pnuematic Sales. I emailed then some details on a Saturday arvo and had a response that evening. Rang the place the following week and spoke to a fella named John who used to work for the CFS in the Adelaide Hills. He said he used to supply and install the breather kits on the CFS vehicles in the group he was associated with.

So I headed in this morning (instead of heading to work) and picked up a collection of bits. I pretty much got everything except for a couple of hose clamps. The gear I've got is manufactured by Metal Works and looks pretty cool. All push in and lock in. Found out the rear diff thread is 1/8 Gas (G1/8) thread for those interested in a bit of DIY. So John looked at what I was after and then said he would look in the rubbish bin.

Turns out they have a bin of bits that are basically give away. He had a heap of tubing and a number of fittings. I'm planning on using the exiting hosing where possibly since it seems easy to link into so I ended up with the following parts:
Push in Union fitting for rear Diff (x 1) (from bin)
Push in fitting for attaching Filter (x 4)
Push in reducer to attach to existing hose (x 3)
            G1/8 Brass Fine Filters (x 4) (1 from bin)
Orange Polyurethane Hose 6 x 4mm (about 15m) (from bin)

Since many of the items came from the bin and the small amount of off the shelf items he was happy to take $15.00 all up. How happy was I!

Have also mounted a strip of angle aluminium along the fire wire which will be used to hold the filters in check up nice and high. Will be fitting the front and rear diff breathers tomorrow night but wont get time for the transmission and transfer for a few weeks.

              Hows the install going nick?

I see there are a few people saying the rear diff thread is a 1/4" and others are saying it is a 1/8" BSP. I guess the only way is for me to get under and remove it

                Switched,

I did all of my breathers last week (2xdiffs, transfer and auto). The rear diff is definately 1/8". I used a BSP fitting with thread tape and it screwed in sweet.

I'm off from work for a few days sick so I had a quick go at the front diff and fitted this up to a bracket I manufactured to hold the filters. This is then located to a couple of spare bolts in the firewall. That was simple. The rear diff is definently 1/8 as the fitting I was given fits perfect altough I did a trial fit and then removed. Might do the rear properly today.

                    Re: Diff Breathers

I had a search for my breathers last night (08 D4D) and found the front diff breather located in the usual spot near the fuse box. The AT and the transfer case breather seem to sit above the bell housing in between the firewall and the engine block. One breather is covered in a heat resistant sheath and I think this is the transfer case, (it looks a smaller guage hose). This one has a blue dot on the breather itself and is located more on the passenger side.

I've found both of those from the engine bay as well as underneath. I think it's probably easier to tackle the extension from underneath.

                      • Re: Diff Breathers

Righto, I've extended the front and rear diff breathers. Pretty simple to do. Front needs no comment but I ran the breather hose from the rear up to the front into the engine bay. If I was to do it again I probably wouldn't bother. I've tried as hard as possible to run the hose behind existing shielding and hose/pipe work underneath but it sort of feels exposed to stones being thown up. The location and placement of the hose should be pretty good but I think for absoloiute assurance you would be better off running it up into the vehicle, the rear light or hide it up behind the fuel pipe.

Anyway a few snaps of my workmanship:

To help provide some protection from rocks I run the hose that is suspended with some slack in split tube at the rear. Most of the run underneath the vehcile is pretty well hidden but near the front where it heads up to the bottom of the firewall it's a little exposed but I've tried to locate it behind the eistingh hoses which I think are the brake lines (probably wrong)

On Saturday I went on a Club Training Day and run it through water and mud. I'm not in the mood to check that the oil is not milky but I'm confident that it's all good. When I get time in a few weeks I will have a go at the Transfer and Transmission breathers. Not in a real hurry to do it yet.

                        • Re: Diff Breathers

I have also finished my breathers off also and have a few snaps, while i'm impressed with the look of the Billet Race Craft QUAD breathers, i picked up on eBay, I wouldn't say this kit specifically is a must have setup, they are really racing bling (nothing wrong with that though). They do seem expensive for what is provided in the kit, and having to buy additional fittings to go from the various hose sizes used by toyota for the standard breathers to the 5mm hose supplied in the kit, is an additional cost on top. As it was only the rear diff would accept the supplied connector for the blue air line supplied. The remaining fittings supplied went into the box of (probably) never to be used 'odds & ends'.

As per Schaffer's recommendation, had a look at Adelaide Pnuematic Sales on Marion Rd, Mitchell Park (seriously around the corner from me) for the additional fittings I required to finish this little project off. I also dealt with John, he took the time to come out and look under the bonnet to see what I'd already done, comment and offer knowledge and advise. Really helpful bunch of blokes there, even had a chat about their subarus! Anyone looking to try this mod, should probably follow Schaffers idea as a cheaper but still quality option - unless of course, money is not object and you love blue anodised alloy...

In the end, I'm happy with the way it looks, and thats all that really matters. Haven't had a chance to submerge and test them yet, but all should be good!

Quad Breather Kit, Filter location, and hose routing

I think I picked up that the thoughts were that the Y joint on the transfer case connected the transfer case and transmission breathers together to one outlet? Or maybe I read it wrong. So I've included below an additional few shots just to expand on Schaffer's pics earlier. I have a 2007 GXL D4D, and I only found the transmission breather after seeing Schaffer's shot - although mine seems slightly different.

                          Transmission Breather
Circled in red, it can just be seen poking into the engine bay from the drivers side inbetween the firewall and transmission. This can only be found using blind feel, by putting hand up inbetween exhaust and transmission (as mentioned by Schaffer), small hands are a bonus - i lost skin! The 2007 seems to be connected to a fixed steel pipe along the top of the trans heading toward the rear and then to a 90 degree bend, but this can't be removed. Once the hose clamp connecting it to the trans has been pried off, removal of the breather is done from the engine bay as it seems to sit inside a PCV bracket and can't be pulled out from underneath.

My copy of the breathers Removed
I included the Y joint of the transfer case more for infomation, didn't take a pic of what went back in (must not have been thinking at the time)!

Trasfer & Coupling Case Breather Hoses? (the Y join removed)
From what I can see (not much - more feel), the transfer case has one breather to the Y join which also seems to go to the case surrounding the coupling between the trans and transfer case. Then a separate one again for the actual transmission, as shown above.

Hope thats all clear, I tried... If you have any questions, please PM me, I'll try to help...
