Toyota Standard Rear Diff Lock?

My 120 is a GX spec 2003 model, its standard with a rear diff locker, wondering why everyone here is talking about fitting ARB lockers.

Is there something wrong with the standard locker? Or was this not on Oz speced vehicles?

As Ive just bought the vehicle also not to sure on how the locker works as I assume there is no air compressor pump, any ideas? I obviously know how to work it, as in switching it on, but wondering about the actual activation mechanism. My model doesnt have any electronic traction control etc etc

And Im sure Im not confusing this with the Centre diff lock, which should be called a transfer box lock? Which is activated through the gear shift lever?

the aus 03 gx only has a rear lsd, the gxl,vx and grande have traction control as an option, no aus spec prado came with a locker standard, cause if it did everyone would pick them for the upgrade model, as to the activation method for your rear locker i would say it would operate on a vacum solenoid

I have an 04 GXL Prado, and Im wondering what is the go with the diffs? The Ellerys Manual I have states that the rear is an LSD, is this correct? If this is the case then fitting fwd air lockers should be sufficient wouldnt it?

Can someone clear it up for me? What models here got lockers? If any...

Yes you would have a LSD rear diff, I don't believe that any Prados were sold in Australia with factory diff locks. The Limited slip diff is exactly that "limited" generally only useful for limiting wheel spin, when for example, cornering on wet bitumen and one wheel gets a bit light. Once you get one wheel in the air off road all the drive will go to that wheel and the LSD won't help at all. A front locker will help off road, or a rear is good too, but both is best if you have the cash.

No Oz delivered Prado came with a factory diff lock.

Toyota LSD are hopeless when new and generally stuffed completely by 40K km. Due to their design, increasing the preload also achieves little.

This, together with a reputation for breaking under load, means it's generally considered the norm to fit an after market locker in the rear first.

No 120 in oz was fitted with a rear locker as standard, LSD only.

We used to import Group 4 escort rally parts from the UK. Freight was okay given the distance. Much cheaper than from the US

to complete this properly, you need the ecu and complete diff and no parts are available if you break it here in Aust.
looking at the parts listings few parts are the same between the LSD and the locked version.
therefore it is cheaper and easier to go with an aftermarket locker.
