Hmm thort this might be interesting..

took mine in yesterday to "inspect" the driveline clunk problem..
They have rectified it by "filing the splines and installing the "new" collet that ToyMotor have said is the new fix for this problem" ... Anyone heard of this "collet" before .. what is it and what does it do ?? Or is this all Service Manager talk ??? to baffle the unwary punter.

I asked how long this has been the fix.. and the SM said they have only had it for a month or so ... Only the second car they have fitted the mod to ?? (Pretty big Northside Brisbane dealer)


Anyhow it does not clunk at the moment and I shall wait and see if the noise comes back...

I'm so over toyota dealers and bull#$% stories. I now grease my own tailshaft every 5000km, just 3 pumps with grease gun and the problem has gone and not returned.
just my 3 cents worth...

Mine also followed the temperature Mav. I thought mine was the other way though? Cant actually remember, it was years ago!!

Mind you it was properly greased by CMI in ADL at 10k service and has not returned. Now ready for the 50k.

I had exactly the same thing done last week . The thumping noise seems tp have disappered for now

I'm not sure if my D4D Auto is suffering from this problem or not. It is a July 08 build, so I assume it has the improved spline mentioned earlier in this thread. Can someone please clarify when exactly the thump occurs? I've gone back to the OP, but the exact timing of the thump is not clear.

As for mine, it has done this since new. Braking to a stop at traffic lights, all is OK. Waiting at the lights with foot on brake, all is OK. When foot is removed from brake pedal ,but before foot is applied to loud pedal, a small thump is felt, like you have been shunted from behind.

Is this the thump described throughout this thread, or is the one in question here during braking to a stop or while stationery?

I hope I'm not being pedantic, but want to make sure I'm on the same page before I go spruiking off to the service dept. :?

G/Day to all members,my prado had the new slip joint replaced about 15000 kys ago ,the clunk returned just before the 50000 th service .Told the service department about the problem again & was asked if i had greased the the tailshaft which i had not.The service department said not to grease it ,they pulled it apart & cleaned the spline.Done about 3000kys since problem solved again.

Posted earlier about tailshaft replacement under warranty fixing the thump problem........ 6 months later, and it appears to be coming back. Not as severe as it was prior to the replaced tailshaft, but it is definitly the same thump, just gentler. I asked at a recent service, and the service guy said: "yeah, you have to grease every service."

Post service, and the thump is still there.... so either they didn't grease it, or it was a fob off.

Mine has thumped since new. It was greased today at the 10,000klm service, let's hope its fixed :|

Well we had our Tailshaft replaced today under warranty as well as a transfer case oil seal replacement at our local dealer. The invoice total was just over $1000 billed to Mr Toyota..... Don't ever bust a tailshaft as they have a list price of $1350. Hopefully this has fixed the clunking problem.

I booked in today for the 10K service. After reporting the thump, I was asked if it occurred while braking or starting again from a stopped position. When I asked what difference that makes, I was informed that there are two different problems, each with a separate cause. (In my case it happens just after removing foot from the brake pedal). At least it sounds as though they are quite familiar with the symptoms, so that's a start. I tried to get more information, but the guy was tight-lipped except to say they'd look at it. I'll just have to wait another week to find out I guess.

Mine used to do both.. And greasing it solved both.

Don't know if it's a tailshaft issue......this is in a D4D Auto with 11,000k's
Only just started after its 10,000k service....
After a few seconds stopped at the lights a faint thump is sometimes felt as if the Auto has had time to think about what gear it should now be in and decided to select 1st. It doesn't happen all the time.
Looks like a trip or call to the dealer.....

After a few seconds stopped at the lights a faint thump is sometimes felt as if the Auto has had time to think about what gear it should now be in and decided to select 1st. It doesn't happen all the time.
Looks like a trip or call to the dealer.....

Mine did exactly the same thump, seems to have been fixed at the 10,000k service by greasing the tailshaft

Well, I had the grease job done at the 10,000K service. I've given it 2 days to make sure it really is not fixed and it really is not fixed. Admittedly, it's only about half as severe as previously, but I thought it was supposed to be the final solution.

The thing that irks me is they'll always say they need it for a full day again, and then they'll probably just regrease it. :x

Zoipzy, mate what dealer are you using, i go to sci fleet albion, the first time they will grease after that if not fixed mine was replaced , all good since.

Maybe I shouldn't be so cynical since I haven't even gone back to talk to them about it. I won't name them here.
