  • LSD preload testing

Hey guys, how are we all? I have 04 petrol auto. I seem have a bit of trouble with my rear diff. It doesnt seem to be limiting the amount of slip. I tend to have a bit of trouble climbing things because of this. I am wondering if there is a way to check the preloading on the diff at home or is it more of a specialised thing to test. The next part of this, if it turns out my diff is worn can i get a clutch kit to change out or will i be up for a diff replacment?

    Cheers,
    steve

The diff needs to come out if you are having trouble with the slippery diff , Try an oil change first though in case the oil is breaking down, the diff can be over hauled easily enough , no big drama

The Prado LSD is pretty crap, they usually stop working properly around 5 minutes after they are used the first time.

Hi there Steve, AJ is correct, Toyota LSD are shit/useless from new, you may gain a tad better buy changing oil but my guess besides doing it as per normal service requirements and checking for any metal particles your better to save your $$$ and add a locker like chalk and cheese. If you were referring to a Nissan LSD then that's a different story. Now I'm gunna cop it for mentioning that N word lol...... Cheers Steve

Cheers steve, i was hoping to get the rear lsd working like it should and just putting an e-locker in the front. Mainly due to pricing but also due to the fact eaton dont seem to make an e-locker for the rear of a prado... They may do, but i havent come across it on their website.

Yes AJ is correct . Toyota are totally incapable of producing a LSD that works from new . I've had two Toyota trucks and a prado with them fitted and they do absolutely nothing at all .dont waste any of your time or money trying to fix it .

E-locker it is front and rear. I just priced up the thrust washers and clutch plates only for a diff rebuild and it was over $400. Then there is the other shims and bearing to replace as required. I think ill just do an oil change while i save the pennies. Cheers for input guys.

I had front and rear E-Lockers fitted to my 100 sereis by Aldo at AD Differentials in Balcatta. I quick search of the Perth pefromance car forums will give you a good idea of the quality of Aldo's work - highly recommended.

I got my prado with on 40k on the clock, the LSD barely able to grab on wet grass , let alone be usable when 4 wheeling.
I did some looking around and there is a kit you can buy which does increase the effectiveness of it. there are replacement clutch packs as well, but for the money you might as well get a locker. I have an air locker now, what a world of difference!
                          Cheers

I pull apart and shim them all the time, as said they do just wear out but Toyota factory break away torque values are really low even brand new.
If the clutch washers arnt too worn (and usually are fine) you just cut up a shim and put it on the outside of the LSD packs between them and the housing..

Having said that i would still go a locker and is hardly worth the effort even doing it myself for free..
