  • Manual Free Wheeling Front Hubs

Has anyone fitted manual free wheeling front hubs to their Prado. I would like to be able to use low range with out being in 4wd to maneuver my camper.

    Kevin,
I have never heard of that for the Prado but I am interested in why you would want to do that. I am unaware of any problem with the constant 4wd in the Prado when the center diff is unlocked. There is no wind up, no steering problems like understeer. How would it help in that circumstance?

The center diff is only unlocked in high range. In my case I would like to be able to be in low range when reversing my camper into it's home without having to slip the clutch and I don't really want to have the center diff locked in low range so that I don't tear up my lawn.

I think that it would be easier to install a switch to stop the centre differential engaging. It has been done on 80 series Land cruiser, I’m sure that it can be done on the Prado.

On the Grande not sure if it locks centre diff when you select low range, as i thought you had to push the lock button pretty sure you boys with gxl's don't have this i may be wrong wouldn't be the first time.

So if this is the case can't see why you couldn't.

I don’t have a wiring diagram for the Prado, so I can not work it out. But I’m sure some one with one will be able to work it out.

I was considering free wheeling hubs for my trip to the cape. If I was to blow a cv or front diff, I could still drive home by unlocking the front hubs, but it seems you need to fit a part time kit for that to happen.
Does anyone know about the part time kits?

                  Les,
I just found this web site http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/part_time_4wd.htm. I have asked if they do a 2wd conversion for the Prado. Will post their reply.

                  Cheers,
