  • Fitment of air for lockers.

    Hi all!

I'm looking at fitting a rear locker on the GXL (non4d4) I own, with the air compressor that can inflate tyres as well. One of the stores has suggested putting the compressor under the seat (to keep it out of the elements!!) - which I have never heard of before.

Has anyone else heard of this, or are most getting them done under the bonnet. I'm wondering about just how noisy they'd be, and am not reall keen on the shop cutting a hole in the belly of the car to try and get the hoses through. I've got a dual battery setup, and also wonder if it's worth getting teh compressor run off that.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

    Nut,

My last 3 4WDs have had under bonnet compressors and I've never had an issue (good quality Blue Tongue and ARB units). In fact I'm just about to install a second compressor into the Prado that saw duty in my previous vehicles.
Compressors are noisy and any passengers sitting in the vehicle whilst inflating tyres would find it annoying.

Yeah I try to keep all the noisy things outside too.
You will find that under the bonnet air compressors have been disigned to be --- under the bonnet!!!

You might also find that if you use it for awhile the compressor might get a little warm. If it is under the seat, rather than under the bonnet, it is unlikely to cool as quickly which may cause problems.

Mine (an ARB) is under the bonnet and I have had no problems.

Finally, the UHF radio is under the passenger seat in my car, with an inverter to be installed under the driver's seat when I get time.

        Nuge.
