  • Noise From Rear Wheel

Hello all this is my first post, but have been perusing this sight for some time and picked up a few worthwhile tips. I was out at Kennilworth last week putting the car through some slippery mud (not deep). At one section I didn't give it enough juice and couldn't get up a small incline. No biggy but as I tried to get out in L L2 and centre diff locked, a whine came from the drivers rear wheel. I picked up the car second hand a few months ago and its got 74000 on the clock, I'm also the first to take it off road.
    Any comments would be welcome.

how is the whine occuring, underload, coasting, all the time, when braking, at a particular speed?

Wheels spinning but not moving! First time I've heard it, but it didn't affect me when I got out and tackled it again with success.

maybe there was a bit of debris around the back wheel when it spun causing the noise, could this be right

Didn't notice anything when I washed it down but I'll have another look.
I may have to put myself in that situation again to try and pin point the noise. Thanks

bet it was TC, the noise can be off putting if you havent heard it before

I'll definately have to replicate the situation and take notice of all dash lights this time.
I'm still getting used to all the gadgets and the auto and the non locking hubs as I have/and still driving and 1989 2.8 diesel Hilux with no aircon or power stering.

OK ... might be off on a bit of a tangent ... and you lads might be spot on with the TC ... don't know what it sounds like as I don't have it on my old GXL .... but ....

A couple of weeks back I went through a bit of a mud hole. There's a couple of pics of me stuck in the hole in the Trip Reports section (Wellington Dam). But I had a bit of a squeeling noise from the driver's side rear (and it wasn't any of the kids  ). When I got home I cleaned everything out ... the noise was still there. I took the wheels off and there were some small stones jammed in the back of the brake caliper ... where the pads slide in.

RussWA had a similar problem where some debri had gotten into the handbrake drum built into the rear rotor and he had to remove the rotor to get a look at it and clean it out.

Just another idea. Hope you find the cause soon.

                          Cheers
