I am hoping that I have located the problem. The little rubber tube just to the right of the electrical switch (on top of the actuator) was split and as soon as a I knocked it, it came clear of the plastic lug it was attached to on top of the actuator.
I cut the split end of it and re attached it.
My question now is:
Is that tube supposed to be carrying oil from the actuator back towards the engine bay (that's where it runs towards) or have I not found the problem at all?
The manual I have for the Prado (Max Ellery) shows no pictures whatsoever of the diff actuator.
Hoping someone has knowledge of this diff actuator and associated tubing.
The plastic part is the trasnfer case actuator. Here is a diagram of it which is Fig 36-11
It then says refer to Fig 36-09 which is this one
So you can see that it goes back into the transfer case (see 36111T). So it looks like oil is being circulated through the transfer case and the actuator.
Once you have repaired the tube and give the entire area a good clean, drop the transfer case oil and fill it up with new oil.
Crikey, mine must have fallen off. It's not there.
