  • Loose gear lever when in gear on a 6 speed manual 120 series D4D

    Hello all,

Just got back from Melb yesterday and went to drive the Prado today (2009 120 series D4D) and noticed excessive gear lever play when in gear. There is no up and down movement just horizontal. Asked the wife about it and she said "yeh, I noticed it after you left." I am tipping it's a bush of some sort, have to have a look at the workshop CD a bit later. Has anyone else experienced this, vehicle is still under extended warranty. I think I read something similar not long ago but couldn't find the thread.

    regards,

    Winston.

That poly bush on the bottom of the stick is hopefully the culprit.
    Certainly not a common issue.
Let us know how you go.

Had a look at the workshop CD. It doesn't show much. The vehicle is booked in for the 15th Jan to get the gearbox looked at along with the 110,000km svc and towbar inspection (have to wait until the 7th Jan for the parts to come in.

It's pretty simple, if you know how to remove the trims, & then, well I even have trouble remembering, so many different vehicles but Prado 6 speed, once you can see where the stick goes in you just push the retainer & turn to unlock & it will pop up. Then pull the stick out, it's in a hole you can't really go wrong ( ppl do stuff up with transfer stick, don't go & pull that out) anyway once you have it out you can check there a plastic bush on the end of the stick. You will c if its crap & if it looks ok you should be able to work out if the problem is further in than the end of the stick.

        Hope that make some sense.

...and if the plastic bush is stuffed I believe AMTS sells new metal ones that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

I'd say stick with plastic, it's not a regular problem & then it Still has a soft point that is easy to replace.

I think you might be thinking of a part for the autos?

There is also a bush inside the stick.
The stick is made of two parts and has a bush in it that looks similar to a suspension bush. It's to reduce vibration felt trough the shifter.
Toyota don't list it separately (they want you to get a whole s gear stick assembly). However with a little effort the bush can be removed and a new one sourced through engineering/bearing suppliers as it's a standard engineering component. For some reason more of an issue on Hilux's than Prado's. Some info over on the New Hilux Forum.

Cheers for the info gents. If the vehicle wasn't covered by warranty I would do the job myself but seeing it is the choice is simple.

6 speed manual. Gear lever lose when in gear.

Hi all. My top half of my gear stick is loose when in gear. Is it easy as just replacing the bush on top half of stick. Or do u have to by the whole gear lever. Also what's the best recommend gear box oil to go with Nulon g70 to help third gear crunch. Thanks in advance.

That little bush on the bottom is the one I thought it was, I see them when doing clutches, bit ordinary wear usually.

If its loose at the top you might need the whole stick. Really need too remove console to check where the play is.
