        Thankx symo,

Actually no, it's locked all the time, & releases when you turn. I'm no expert yet, but have a google at 4wd systems lokka.
Makes a clicking when it's unlocked.

I had lock rights fitted f/r to my last toyota v6 5speed OK off road in places but disappointing on road...wet road and roundabouts it would engage disengage
making the car pig root or gas it to make it lock and around you go side ways out only had it less than three month..
Off road in sand was disappointing as well dig all 4 wheels in (off camber hill) take you over the edge where standard cars would drive.
Best thing now is I decide when to engage them ...IMO I would never have auto lockers again.
        Cheers

        Hey Geoff,

        How's it going?

If you had auto lockers f & r I can imaging the drive, not good!
I know ppl with that set up & yes they love it, but they are hard core extreme offroaders.

I believe having a rear auto locker is ok, I have been told by the guys that have them in prados they are happy or love them.
Please confirm, you had them front and rear?

        ####.

          A simple google search on Wikipedia;

"Automatic lockers lock and unlock automatically with no direct input from the driver. Some automatic locking differential designs ensure that engine power is always transmitted to both wheels, regardless of traction conditions, and will "unlock" only when one wheel is required to spin faster than the other during cornering. These would be more correctly termed "automatic unlocking" differentials, since their at-rest position is locked. They will never allow either wheel to spin slower than the differential carrier or axle as a whole, but will permit a wheel to be over-driven faster than the carrier speed. The most common example of this type would be the famous "Detroit Locker," also known as the "Detroit No-Spin," which replaces the entire differential carrier assembly. Others, sometimes referred to as "lunchbox lockers," employ the stock differential carrier and replace only the internal spider gears and shafts with interlocking plates. Both types of automatic lockers will allow for a degree of differential wheel speed while turning corners in conditions of equal traction, but will otherwise lock both axle shafts together when traction conditions demand it."

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Locking_differential#Automatic_lockers

          Automatic unlocking is correct.

          Simple answer well done.

Just fitted front and rear ARB air lockers. Cost $3,600 (fitted) with compressor. Work well in the rough stuff, but i have not tried them yet in extreme situations. Got them as i usually carry and anchor (Tvan). Steering is a pig when front is locked and you enter hard ground and want to turn, so have to turn off the front as soon as you can. versatility is the key i think.

I steered away from the ARB system because of the often described problems with them.

From all the research I have settled on an Eaton E-Locker. Rear first.

After researching this myself I decided when the funds allow it'll be an Eaton E-Locker. Simple, manually turned on (very important for me) and effective. I've heard too many bad things about Auto Lockers and knowing my luck, if I went Air locker it would leak.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

Coming on/off randomly on roads causing the car to be unpredictable. Also noisy.

                                #### a mate of mine has an autounlocker in the rear in his 80 series, generally no issues though he finds it affects the car on wet roads or loose gravel. His description was that when the diff unlocks the diff drives the car that side which makes it feel loose in the back. On gravel he simply locks the centre diff and all good, wet roads though can be uncomfortable.
