Yes it did cost a bit to recondition the engine. Not a job i would like to do again.

Be warned re tuning chips. They WILL cause the injectors to leak due to raising the rail pressure. This WILL cause a hot spot on a piston and the eventual hole in a piston WILL come as a result.

Doing a lot of research on engine failures the vast majority are D4D engines with chips that tow.

Good luck to anyone that is running a tuning chip that raises rail pressure that tows.

    Rusty.

    • Rusty62 - Hi Rusty, I have a 2007 D4D auto 5 speed. I have been following Mark (MRW82) and have started constructing the kit as per diagram on Page 8. He said to use a 6.8 ohms, 5 amp resistor. I don't have a lot of knowledge in auto electronics even though I do all my own mechanical work. Most of the things you have all been doing goes over my head, but i have sat down and started putting the relays together and was hoping that Mark would come on and update his system. I was actually just looking at your Image earlier this afternoon. I don't understand what you mean with the 6.8 and the the 12 ohms. I thought there was just one resistor in the kit like in the kit I helped fit to my nephews 200 series from Wholesalers Auto. How is your kit going now??? I priced a kit for mine the other day from Wholesalers, It was $ 525 + postage i think. Thanks for getting back to me Rusty. Cheers for now Bill.

        I can't find the post you refer to (I think I changed the default number of posts per page from standard) but I suspect the resistor is actually 6.8 ohms 5 watt - if it was 6.8 ohm 5A then it would be 170W (P = I x I x R = 5 x 5 x 6.8) which is huge! It would also have 34V across it (V = I x R) which would be a bit unusual for a 12V vehicle.

Assuming it's a 5W resistor you could get something like this or this from Jaycar

        • peter_mcc,

Hi and thanks Peter, The Post no. for the diagram is #107. The resistor is aluminium with a heat sink. These seem to be used on all the kits I have seen while looking around. I will check in Jaycar in Darwin next time I'm up there and see what they have. Thanks and cheers Bill.

          • If it's aluminium with a heat sink that sounds like a 25W or 50W resistor. I've tried reading through it all but there doesn't seem to be a coherent summary of what works.

6 ohm 50W resistors are available on eBay cheaply - I got a set of 4 for $6.50 delivered. Search for "LED load resistor" and make sure you check the resistor value included! Jaycar doesn't seem to stock 25W ones any more - the highest they go is 10W. You could put 3 x 18 ohm 10W resistors in parallel if you needed to (this one).

You said you were looking for 6.8 ohms - 6 is pretty close but I'm not sure how much it matters. Hopefully someone who has done it will help...

The system i use was designed by an electrical engineer (my son ). The ECU on our car required an input to replicate the coil on the valve in the gearbox to prevent alarms. The second resister is to reduce the power to this valve. I'm not sure but some of the 120 series have slightly different electrics with the traction control fitted cars. Our unit only has two relays but they are duel units so very compact. He also made a small circuit board to mount these relays.
I will see if the circuit is still on his computer and post.

              • Hi all, Just when I think I am starting to get my head around it. Bamboozled again with technology. Peter, I nada look at ebay but there are so many, all different.
Rusty, I'm lost again. Maybe not meant to be mate. I may stuff it up. I will start reading it all again. Take care and cheers Bill.

                • Ordering and fitting the overpriced one is really easy and you soon forget about the wallet pain on your first towing road trip.

                  • Try this for a resistor (coming from Darwin so you should get it quicker than one from China)

                    • Hello boys,
Must say most of this is way way over my head just don't follow electronic terminology , ( it's got to be join the 2 red wires then the black ones just cut the blue one off and tape up the green one ) any more and I'm buggered, only just sorted out a relay .
just got an 09 120 1kd after the 1kz ,not used it yet getting injectors done tomorrow, got it for a bit more towing power for the caravan,

Now from what I've read this TC lockup is the thing I need to help towing, but can't get my head around the difference between the TC locker and just dropping down a gear , is there a difference??? Seems the same to me can't get my head around it,
would be a cheaper option than putting a cooler for the gearbox or am I wrong again?
I must start reading from page 1 again see if I'm missing something, but would love an explanation,

                      Cheers Alan.

                      • GUV, Hi Mate, thanks for the advice, but I have always been a tinkerer and to construct and install something like this would be just great, sort of "I did it my way " type thing. I love your Shortie. Not a lot of those little beasts around.

Rusty62, sorry so long getting back to you. Have been up in the big smoke ( Darwin ) for the weekend, or a bit of it. I had a quick look in Jaycar but no heat sink resistors as you said. I tried to have a look at the duel latching relays as well. NO, none. I really don't know whether to carry on with Marks or if you can put up your circuit and I will see what is involved. Did you have a chance to have a look for it. How do you fit the latching relays??? are the soldered through the little board?? I was looking at the little boxes as well. So many little bits to look at in Jaycar. Definitely a mens shop.

Dabeanian, Hi Mate, I think I will leave your question to someone that could explain it better to you than myself. I know how it goes, but I don't have a good way with words on this type of technology. All the best.Take care all. Cheers Bill.

                        • Peter_mcc, Hi mate . As per above post, I had a very quick look in Darwin yesterday in Jaycar. I still don't know exactly what I'm looking for yet. Ashdown Ingrams may have the aluminium heatsink resistors but everything was closed by that time of the day. The VBs tasted good anyway. I am taking it one day at a time in between work and play to see what I am doing. No great rush. I want to do this right. All the best, Thanks and cheers Bill.

                          • MRW82, Hi Mark, are you on deck again yet??? I have hit a hurdle. The boys are trying to help me, but I really don't know which way to go now. I think I have my relays ready but am just needing a bit of back up with the resistor size, type etc. Are you able to help with an update please. Rusty is going to try to find a post of his circuits as well. Thanks ALL. Take care and cheers Bill.

                            • G'day bill, I'm still around. But I've sold the 120 and gone back to a 90 series.

I can't remember what size resistor I used on the TCM loop. I'll try and find out.
On the wire that goes from +trigger relay to lock up solenoid you need another resistor, this one was a 21w relay, a load resistor for led indicators is perfect for the job. This reduces voltage to the solenoid to 5v so it won't burn out the solenoid.

                              • MRW82 Hi Mark, Wow, what made you do that?? Do you find the 90 series a better machine, is it a turbo diesel engine? I see in your photos your Suzuki getting the suspension worked out. Looks good. I have a 1983 Daihatsu Scat resin top shortie. Has a 2.8L diesel, 5speed, 5000lbs winch and wide 8 inch wide wheels. I go out gold detecting and the little girl (Winny) takes me where ever I need to go. Some pretty tough places too.
Mark I am attempting to attach a copy of your diagram, (minus the dash light relay). I haven't done this scanning thing before. Are you able to look it over and let me know if Im going in the right direction. Thanks and cheers Bil.
