  • Rear Diff Problems.

Just a query Guys, I was away on the weekend and one of the group mentioned that the New Prado's(05) have a weakness in the rear Diff. He said that he has heard on a few that have come apart with cogs etc ending up everywhere. Any coments on this??? Thanks Nobby

My first time in here for a couple of weeks so this reply is a little late, sorry,
Yes I have had a problem with the rear diff in my 2005 GXL petrol.
My complaint to local Toyota dealer was treated with derision, but as the noise got louder I took it to Bendigo Toyota who had the vehicle for four days and replaced eleven individual parts in the diff under warrenty.
    Works a treat now.
    Sorry for the bad news.

Thanks eerfree. Did they say what was the cause. I have asked the same question on another Prado site and got a few answers much the same as yours, but no one has come up with the "Why is it So".

Is this a recall? How can you tell when the rear differentials start performing badly? I have some mechanical knowledge but enough to diagnose.... Would a normal driver notice this problem, hopefully soon enough to have it repaired or replaced under warranty?

        Thank you.

Baz, at the moment it certainly isn't a recall, and I'm sure that Toyota doesn't want it to be one. All I heard that there is a problem and from what I've read here and on other sites it certainly exists. I gather the only way you know you have it is when your truck stops going foward. What I am trying to do is find out if there is a common demonitor eg, tyre pressure, revving the guts out going up a hill, the list goes on, but you know what I mean. If there was a major problem surely all Prado 120's would be affected. Is this problem restricted to a few that do the same thing with their trucks.

I had a leaking pinion seal in the rear diff at about 2 months old, fixed under warranty. Towed my van to Townsville and could smell hot oil which I thought was coming from the diff, Townsville Toyota could not find a problem but had to top up the oil (a bit of a worry) drove up to Cooktown (inland) and then back via the Bloomfield track put the Prado in for a service and had them rotate all 5 wheels(as per book).
Got it back and my wife, who drives it mostly at home, reports that (it is making a noise !! ) so back to Toyota technican(mechanic?) says it is tyre noise caused by them having to rotate all 5 wheels!!!,local Dunlop bloke thinks same, but could sell me a new set of tyres which will fix the problem.
Hitched the van again and headed to Victoria noise getting worse so put it into Bendigo Toyota who fixed the problem but had to source the parts from Melbourne, Sydney and local all done under warranty.
            Have had no further problems.
Sorry for the long diatribe but that is the story.

                Hi,

We had our rear diff blow up doing some pretty serious rock steps in the Blue Mountains (Spanish Steps). Had to have the car towed home to Sydney and then towed to Toyota the next day. They had the car for 2 weeks and ended up replacing the crown wheel and a few other components in the diff. We broke 3 teeth off the crown wheel. Thankfully, all done under warranty by Toyota (told the job would have costed about $1400 otherwise). Our Prado is 2 1/2 years old.

                Michael
