Diff noise

Hi guys can someone advise me when possibly the rear diff is starting to fail. What are the tell tail signs noises etc I should be concentrating on.

Have you checked oil level, also is it clean, maybe has sucked some water in at some stage ?? Bearing noise would be a tell tale sign or whining noise, then some clunking, or noisy when off and on the throttle ?? They have been known to go bang from some of the forums I have read.... Cheers Steve
