  • Squeaking sound is doing my head in

For quite some time now I've had a squeak/whistle which I haven't been able to locate and stop. It's not engine speed related, it's not gear/driveline speed related, it's not road speed related, it can do it from 100 right down to the point where I stop and the tone/frequency doesn't seem to change. What I have noticed is it comes when the car is loaded up, usually when we're headed away camping. It done it yesterday with a car full of people too, which really annoyed me because I thought I had fixed it by replacing the universal joints. Reason for thinking uni joints was that the squeaking will stop when the car 'lifts' over a bump in the road and can come back when the car settles again. But it's not a suspension squeak, more of a rotational rubbing type sound.
Last time it squeaked on the way away camping and I pumped up the airbags for the drive home and it was silent.

It does sound to be coming from the rear moreso than the front.

Any advice on what I can check to try and fix this thing would be greatly appreciated. It can be fine for months, then we head away for a weekend (car loaded) and it'll bloody squeak, which can be a 3-4 hour trip each way. When it does it, it comes and goes, it's not a constant. (Except it constantly drives me nuts).

A bit of a long shot, but could it be the air conditioning? If you close all the vents on one side with the fan on medium to high, it will whistle.

Nope. I turned the aircon off and it's still there. I know the whistle your talking about though.

      Thanks for your input.

Have you checked your suspension bushes?
you said its a rotational noise but you also said its when loaded you get the noise and pumping up the airbags took it away, so it sounds height related to me.

I recently found an annoying squeak which was coming from my back door. One of my mates hoped right in the back and I drove around work for a few minutes so that he could identify exactly where it was coming from. When he put some pressure on the door it stopped. I found the rubber bump stop on the top LH corner of the door was missing. Silicon spray on the latch has temporally fixed it till I can order a replacement. I thought it was my rear drawers but it was still there after their removal.

I think I may have found the problem. It was the exhaust! There is a spring loaded flanged joint in it, pretty much under the drivers seat. Gave it a good spray with some yield (penetrant) and I'll find out over the next few weeks if it's all good.

i have the same issue with mine at the moment. getting the dealer i bought it from to change the crush gasket or whatever it is which i think would be a more sustainable fix (hopefully).

Mine was only occurring on cold start idle though

Mine squeaked on that exhaust flange as well. Pulled it apart and lubed the bolts, springs and threads with never seize. Fixed it for months.
The back door needs lube on the catch. You can see the wear mark on the top of the latch. A bit of dry lube fixes this one. I carry the dry lube stick in the back door tool kit.
