    Rear Axle Seal

    Just had my 60k service done today by Toyota (2003 Model) and they informed me that my Rear LH seal is leaking all over my brake shoe's
    Cost to fix $1150.00 (includes the barke and Handbrake shoes)for one side. I don't think this is acceptable for a vehicle that has done only 60K easy Klm's,but Toyota said it is normal wear and tear for a 5year old car.

    Sux hey Wattsy... My mrs rolla is a 96 model thats done a touch over 100k and we're spending money on it like no tomorrow... It's never been driven hard and we've done a head gasket, power steering rack, water pump (yesterday) and a few other bits and pieces... Sometimes it doesn't matter how many k's on the car, things just die with age I guess.

      I brought a Toyota thinking they are well made but I think it is more to to with the advertising budget.I had a 1999 3L Jackaroo prior to this and had 135Klm with out a problem and it's still running strong (same with Patrol prior to Jack).I was on my third Clutch in the Prado after 30,00klm and all Toyota said was there is an issue with the manual 120series.I all my cars have been Manuals but the Prado Manual really sucks.

        That's a new one... both in the fact that I've not heard of any gearbox problems and that Toyota admit to any "issues" in general.

          I would be taking my car somewhere else. My 2003 manual has 100,000kms. No problems with rear seal and still on original clutch (but it is due for replacement based on smoking when under load in soft sand).

              I find that suprising about the clutch . My prado is coming up to 4 years
              old with 80000klms and fair bit of that has been towing rally cars or
              camper trailers no problems yet . touch wood . You must be a lucky one
              with your jackaroo as most i've seen have sent their owners broke once
              out of warranty.Holden should have taken pity on the owners and given
              their money back.

                Agree, most of them fill the sump with diesel from the injectors till they run on their own oil. Once this happen they rev with no limiter or throttle control until something comes out the side of the motor! It'd be pretty cool to watch I reckon! :lol:

                  I'm still haven't heard of clutch issues....and it's the same clutch set up as used in 90 series, Hiluxs, Surfs, Hiaces.... so plenty of them out there.

                    My clutch is coming up to 3 years old. I have had the car since new.
                    I have smoked (well not really smoked but you could smell it real bad) on our local beach after doing a bit of fishing.

                    BUT that was before I knew the real benefits of deflating..(thought it was for woosies at first)
                    Byrnsie..... do you deflate when hitting the soft stuff?
                    I have not had it slip since in any situations , and as I said its still going strong to this day........ touch wood........

                      yeah, that really sux - never heard of a clutch giving problems so young! Don't you hate it when dealers patronise you with stupid explanations :x
                      Byrnsie made the suggestion of trying another mechanic ... have you thought of getting a second opinion from the guys that did your LPG conversion?
                      OT, but I have spoken with the guys you suggested and am in the process of making further enquiries. Thank, eh!

                        I had a second opion and the $1,150 for the rear seal is about right.With the 120 series Prado you have to buy a whole new rear hub assembly for $600.00 to fix the leaking seal.I noticed in the "Diff Club" post that someone else found their rear seal allowing water into the diff only after removing the diff (and have picks of the rear Hub assembly and confirm the $600.00)
                        Bear I tossed over the LPG issue for a couple of months but if you are planning to keep your Prado for a few years you'll be well in front and in two years I bet LPG will still be around 1/2 the cost of Petrol.
                        Toyota replaced the Clutch's no questions asked at no cost,infact Toyota suggested they replace the second one after a service.

                          Well im amazed about your clutches. Glad to see toyota came to the party. But that doesnt seem right. ther must be something else wrong and the clutch is the thing that suffers???

                          And the rear hub???? that does seem extreme. I havnt done a rear shaft seal/ bearing for about 15 years, but they were a relatively easy fix. Whats changed??

                            That was Russ that bought the rear hub assemblies with his diff. It seems they have gone to the set-up that front wheel drives have had on the front for years. They normally last for years but..........

                            If it's the same as the front wheel drive set-up in a couple of years there will be an aftermarket alternative if it's any conselation. :roll:
