  • oil leak passenger wheel shaft into diff

    Hi folks,
Hope you can help. I came back from an excursion and have noticed the diff leaking where the passenger wheel shaft goes into the gearbox. cant for the life of me find if this is replaceable in the repair manual i have looked at "thought it was the rear drive shaft" but its not that seal. Ill try and attach some images but if anyone can help me out on the seal part or others, i have a mechanic friend out of state at the moment but said he would help me this weekend if i get the parts ready.
Compared to the drivers side there is 4-5 mm more play.

Don't worry about the play. Normal.
You may want to give it a wash n some time, after mud they can leak a little, but often self clean & stop leaking.
    Or replace it.
It's the axle seal for the front diff.
Tell them where the drive shaft goes into the diff.

      Hi #############,
Thanks for the reply, are you suggesting give it a good scrub while in and see what happens or take the shaft out and clean. thinking if i take the shaft out and just replace it, It would be a good learning cure. Just not sure on the parts. Assuming there is a seal and also i circlip i see in the manual.
      Thanks again,
      Frank

quick edit, i did monkey gum last weekend and got stuck in mud while winching out

Ok, so firstly, mud = $$$$ lol.......
Never use a pressure washer close to a seal like this, it can push the bits if crud into the sealing area.
Use lots of water, from garden hose, enough to get in behind that metal plate, to rinse out the shit.
Use degreaser, like kenco heavy duty & truck wash to help dissolve the crap.
Drive for a couple weeks if its a slow leak it may self clean & seal, stock seals are often better than rough replacements.
Likely nothing wrong with the seal, just crap in the way.

If your pulling it out, yes replace it.
Once you have removed necessary parts,
gently lever & tap outwards on the inner c/v cup will pop it loose from the retaining clip.

I replaced the ones on my 90 series Prado after one developed a nasty leak. They are were different seals for left and right. I assume the 120 is very similar. Don't tap them all the way into the housing.

            Thanks for the advice,
I picked up a new seal form Toyota spare parts it was about $25 as opposed to repco $36 and supercheap had service manuals on sale for $33.
I will replace it now while I have a chance to learn and get an idea of the gunk that did it, I'll post up my findings, hopefully done today.
            Cheers,
            Frank
