  • Manual or auto, that is the question?

I am looking at 120 Prados at the moment, I was hoping that some of you kind and wise folk could share your experiences with the drive lines of the 120.
Looking at the stats on paper, the manual has slightly better economy. How do both wear, I can change clutches but I won't touch an auto if they need fixing.
I don't tow anything big and I do some average off road trips in the high ranges.
Is there much of a difference between the two. Apart from decending steep hills and driving in stop start traffic.
    Thanks for your opinions
    Cheers

Auto is great for 4wding. Keeps the momentum going, especially in sand.
2007 GXL V6 - ARB Bullbar with LED lights, snorkel, extractors, 2 1/4" dual exhaust, K&N filter, dimpled/slotted rotors, headrest dvd players, Ebay Satnav/reverse camera, GME 3100TX, Tigerz11 Side awning on custom brackets with Maxtrax mounts, 300W Invertor, ARB Underbody protection, Lightbar and STZ 265/70 tyres.
Wish list in order I'll get them: Sliders, 2" lift, E-locker, Winch bar with winch.

      i love my manuals
      on my 2nd D4D with a 6 speed
low 3rd is awesome in the sand & low 1st will climb just about anything that i have been on so far
only grip i have is towing the boat out of the water in H 1st, since doing it in L 1st its been fine ( just drive straight up ! )

as a car only did 1700km on a tank twice on the way to Sydney and back last week running around 10.1km/L calculating it & by the MFDisplay in the dash

will see what it does with 1500kg pop top and the way back from QLD next week
2008 Dune D4D manual GXL update - with lots of fruit !! + Roma Razorback Off Road Van

If you not towing much & you are hitting the tracks, with this model stick with auto!

The manuals can eventually cause you grief, the snout where the thrust bearing slides gets worn. It's part of the front of the box, not good.
Other than that both transmissions are bulletproof. I prefer manual, but chose auto because of this problem & the a750f is a great auto transmission.

People that love manuals obviously don't spend much time crawling along the clogged freeways. The auto will do everything that the manual will do including crawling down steep declines and are famously reliable - you'll not find too many issues on this forum.

Yeah I get enough gear changing practice with an 18 speed road ranger during the day, you can't go past an auto for a 4wd.

            Cheers Andrew

I love my manuals... but I'm so over changing gears needlessly when an auto can do it so well. When i drive the wifes Mercedes i like to give it a bit of curry and wish it was a manual but when it comes to daily driving and towing... i just like whacking it in D and forget about it.

Well I am one of the converted.
Auto's are for ......... is what I always said.
Now I have the Auto I would not go back to manual

it was a big change for me Manual petrol to Diesel auto, a change I do not regret.
Auto's have come a long way probably more so in 4wd's

The novelty of manual gear changes wore off for me when I turned about 25. Haven't looked back.
