  • rolling back then a MASSIVE CLUNK

hey guys, we have a driveway that is on a hill, sometimes when we are waiting for the garage door to open, the prado rolls back a tad and all of a sudden there is a MASSIVE clunk and i think the traction control light starts blinking and a beeping noise. what is with that?

        Hey Jared

If I read this right you are driving up your driveway towards the garage door ???

While you wait for the door are you holding the car, on the slope, with the brake or the throttle ???

No obvious reason leaps to mind .... and I'd go with Matt on this one ... and take it Toyota to sort out.

        Cheers

Have to agree with viper, it is most likely the Hill Start Assist. That is certainly what the beeping is in mine and the VSC light should start flashing as well. It will hold the car for a few seconds using the brakes and then let it roll back.

                Hope this helps.

                Cheers

Jared the hill assist isn't a MASSIVE clunk. It's just the same as the ABS working. Think it is worth a trip to the dealer anyway (the hill assist can be easily tested on just about any hill start) but if you want to check yourself stop part way a fairly steep hill (making sure no one is behind) and let the car roll back. If it is the same clunk then it is not a problem.

                      Nothing wrong.

It's the computer sensing that you're rolling back and engaging the brakes.

The sound is pretty harsh, especially seeing as it happens at a time the vehicle is essentially stationary and there's no road noise or engine noise.

The clacking sound is the hydraulics of the ABS/traction control system as it applies the brakes.

If you go out and get cross-axled you'll hear the same sound as the traction control system does its thing.

I had some strange sort pulsing clicking sounds while on my driveway. The car was in neutral and started rolling back.

It was on the driveway which is sort of steep.

I let off the brake and it started rolling back and there were clicking sounds.

                        ?

                        all is well since then

My front cv joints/hubs click once each when i put it into reverse and move about 1-2 metres. They have always dont it and to me sounds like the same thing that has happened to you. Sounds quite loud in the garage with the windows down..
As for the other problem, my car doesnt clunk when it rolls back, but it does stop and apply the brakes pretty quickly by itself making al sorts of random noises and beeps.. the brake pedal also locks up
