Hi,
I don't really post at all but I have made great use of the wealth of knowledge in these forums in the years I have owned my Prado and was hoping someone might have some ideas on what might be the issue I am currently having with my auto transmission.
Earlier in the week I drove through a rather large amount of water over the road which was unfortunately unavoidable, at about 80km/h. The next time I drove the car it started having some issues with the gear selector lights and my reverse lights - the 'R' light on the dash and on the gear selector suddenly came on while I was driving and when I pulled over to try and check out what was going on I realised my reverse lights were stuck on as well. No matter what position the gear selector was moved to, the R stayed lit up and reverse lights on. Reverse lights turned off when car was turned off but the 'R' light remained illuminated and the 'D' slightly illuminates when the car is put into reverse.
I had been driving at about 70km/h at the time the lights came on, but after I pulled over and took off again the car would not change gears at all and I was stuck driving no faster than about 20km/h! Took the car in to mechanic the next day and auto elec has had it since then but has been unable to locate the source of the problem. Has checked all the switches etc that he thought would have been the obvious problem but no luck. He said nothing he has done can get rid of the reverse lights and can't get the car to change gears. He did note there was quite a bit of water in everything and the transmission fluid smelled bad.
Has anyone experienced this problem before and do you think it's likely the whole transmission is just cactus??
Thanks in advance for any input!
