This is to inform about a problem in the clutch of the Prados (Land Cruiser in Europe).
The manual 6 speed version has been reported to avail sand throug a hole under the clutch. The sand spins inside the clutch and ruins it very fast (maybe 1 0r 2 hours). The symptom is a trembling sound and a strong vibration when you push the clutch pedal to the bottom.
This problem has been detected only in cars runing in very hard dunes (Sahara sands) or in heavy mud.
Only owner of cars with underprotections have reported this problem.
The procees seems to be:
1. The sand or the mud goes over the protections, forming a layer of 3 0r 4 cm thick.
2. The spin movement of the clutch creates an air flow throug the ventilation hole.
3. The sand is aspired into the clutch.
4. The rattle and vibration begins.
5. The clutch is ruined very fast and the car must be towed.
This problem has been reported for the first time in a travel to Tunisian Sahara in the begin of 2006 and afected 8 of the 10 Prados of the expedition.
An emergency solution is to clean periodically (every few hours of travel on sand) the sand taking of the little black doors on the side of the clutch with a air compressor.
Currently Toyota Europe is calling the cars afected of this problems and providing a new clutch for free, a big and expensive change at no cost for the customer.
