Has anyone been down the path of finding out if or how you can disconnect the drive to the front wheels for use on the road (save fuel), are free wheeling hubs an option. A few threads have touched on it but none have been conclusive.

i could only see 1 big hurdle.
the transfer is driving front and rear.
disconnecting the drive at the front wheels wont stop the transfer output.

But it will stop the car...just like lifting a front wheel off road!disconnecting the drive at the front wheels wont stop the transfer output
The only way to turn a Prado into a part timer is to change the center diff/transfer case with one from a Hilux (no Torsen LSD), then you'd need the front diff too (auto disconnecting) to keep the ability of shift to 4wd on the fly or/and manual hubs....
A very expensive exercise I would imagine, doubtful you'd save enough fuel to justify it.....

the only way around this is to put some manual fwh in and drive around with the center diff locked in 4h with the hubs in unlocked position, but ya front tail shaft will still spin, will give you a rwd but y bother, ya might as well buy something else other than a constant 4wd, defeats the purpose if ya ask mehad an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.Comment
