Just wondering ..... if you were really flexing the rear ... one wheel tucked right up and the other at full droop ... is it possible that the shockie is allowing that little bit more droop and the spring assembly gets a little loose ... allowing it to move in the seat.
Those seats don't have a lot of positive locating ..... and rely on compression to keep the spring in its place.
Its more guessing than any real knowledge :?

You would think it to be pretty unlikely, although anything is possible. I had to drop the shock out and disconnect the sway bar to be able to move the spring back into position, but who knows what sort of stresses are placed upon the suspension when in the rough stuff...2008 GXL M6 D4D, Silver

I'm with Crammy on this, it's unlikely the spring could come out under full flex.
In my case after the shock and sway bar are off I still had to push the axle down about 50mm to get the spring out.
On installation I did notice how easy it is to get the top of the spring out of place as you lift the axle back up, they flop around a bit when only on the bottom mount.
As for this being the noise, I didn't have any noise with mine.
