  • USE OF DIFFERENTIAL LOCK

Dear friends of Prado 4X4 and adventurers, I am a new owner of a Prado 120 and I still haven't figure out some issues concerning the Differential lock Baton.

1st In which cases I am supposed to engage it? Only in sand, mud, snow and generally when the vehicle is stack ? or I can engage it earlier before I get stacked ?

2nd When I engage it can I turn the wheels? Not at all, a little (11-13)? or I can turn them but not completely? I have heard all three theories and I don't know what to do.

3d I can engage the differential lock with high as well as with low transmitions in my gear box?

I will be very grateful if you can help me with this issue...

P.S. Please excuse my English... ( I am from beautiful Greece) 8)

Have you tried reading the owners manual which came with the car, failing that the sun visor usually has some information on it.
Lightforce 240Blitz driving lights, Rear hitch recovery point, GME tx3400 uhf, 64watt Uni-Solar cell, ARB CKMA12 Air compressor. all awaiting new vehicle to be delivered so they can be remounted.

Yes. it seems just about every market except Australia gets the option of factory rear lockers! Ripped off eh?

Welcome George, there are some good 4X4 videos that answer this kind of question on our get together website. They will show you when to engage the centre diff etc. the link is:

Just click on the How To 4X4 button and it will bring up a series of videos for you to watch.

How ever I don't know if I can engage the diferential lock while on the move. I mean when I see thick mud while on the move, can I just press the dif lock button? Thank you...

i dont know about the diff button maybe the newer versions of prado toyota changed the system but in my prado which is VX 5speed manual trans (2003),the moment i push the 4x4 lever from the H position to the Hl position or the Ll position the diff lock is automatically get engaged and according to the owners manual you can engage the diff lock at any time and at any speed but you shouldnt engage it on roads(asphalt), as long as you engage it on off roads then your fine.

sorry for the late reply and i hope that answer your Q tho

Yep you can engage the centre diff lock on the move.

On mine it also cuts out the stability control at the same time.

When it is raining cats and dogs, does anyone engage full 4WD on bitumen roads? If so, is diff lock-up still likely to occur?

                    Regards

Yes transmission bind-up is still likely to occur. Unless you're only going in pretty much a straight line. If it's really belting down, you're gonna be more limited by the actual grip of the tyres than any lack of "drive" to those tyres.

You are always in fulltime 4wd, if you are talking about engagaing the centre diff lock the answer is no. 4h is normal, 4hl is centre diff lock engaged.

best advise is when on tar dont lock the centre diff or ya will f@#k something, repair bill can be very expensive if ya killya transfer or break a diff, if ya have to lock it in dont turn a corner or you will wind it up, it would be ok to lock it in low at a steep boat ramp to give ya some extrs power and to save ya clutch but thats all i would do, cheers samo
