  • Locker other than ARB

    Hi all

    Long time reader,first time poster.
Firstly I would like to thank you all for such a great forum, it has provided me with a wealth of knowledge to help me start modifying my prado.

I would like to know if anyone here is running diff locks other than ARB. I looking at getting a detroit auto-locker in the front and a true-trac in the rear out of the states for less than a grand.

Also, can you put an auto locker in the front or are all prado's full time 4wd. I own a base model gx v6 manual.

Hi Phlix, welcome to the forum.

All Australian Prados are full time 4wd.
This means an auto front locker is not really a great idea as it can result in steering control issues on road that can be quite dangerous.

An auto locker (or unlocker ) is fine in the rear.

HH is High range unlocked centre diff, HL is high range locked centre diff( used for loose surfaces), LL is low range locked centre diff(use for slow offroad work), yours has H and L and it should also have a button to lock and unlock the centre diff instead of doing it manully with the gearstick.

        Hi MickL

I read this elsewhere in this forum and understand this to mean that when the little stick is in HH that the front driveshaft is not driving the front diff and therefore an auto locker shouldn't be a problem on road.

As Mick said the prados are fulltime (constant) 4wd, so the front diff is always being driven, its like a 60/40 split. Engaging the 'centre diff lock' button, lock both front & rear drive shafts into 50/50 drive

in regards to difflocks for 100% positive traction you could also consider 4wdSystems Lock-rite lokka

Thanks for clearing up that drive split query.
Would it make sense then to put true-track LSD in the front and a locker in the rear than.
BTW- if I do end up going the arb route do the 4L petrol manuals have the rd-111 or the rd-121 locker in the front.

The price book has Prado front locker- RD111/121

I would give ARB a ring and find out the difference.
