i would recommend seeing a transmission specialist and get them to check it out,
and get them to remove transmission pan and check.
    flush auto fluid very well.
also see toyota and see if they can pull any fault codes and reset.

I just bought the LC120 and I think is a very nice car. I am most interested to what the Toyota service told you and if there is any damage finally to your gear box.

          Damonat,

Thank you for the prompt response. I guess the first trip tomorrow morning will be Toyota to see if anything has been logged on the ECU.

Have anyone heared of someone with a busted Prado Auto gearbox in the 2003 onward range? I've tried to find a listing but just could not find anything. Must admit that the gear shift from 1-4 is currently smooth ?!?!? This does not sound like the box? Maybe the solenoid pack ? Guess I'll know soon enough.

Just hope it does not cost a arm & 45 legs

          Oh dear oh dear.

Same thing happened to me about eighteen months ago in my 2006 VX 5 speed petrol. I'd been in the High Country - up Dingo Hill in the wet - when the same lights you've mentioned came on, and when I got back on to the tar the transmission would not change up from 3rd to 4th.

The dealer kept saying he couldn't find anything wrong, until I finally got hold of a Road Tester - it took him three minutes to "see" the problem. To cut a long story short the vehicle was off the road for three weeks. It was sent to (supposedly) one of Toyota's two Melbourne dealers authorised to fix transmissions, and the problem was put down to the failure of an oil seal. Maye yes; maybe no - I'll never know.

          All done under warranty.

          Good luck!!!!

            george this sounds right.
toyota now use spelist dealers that have a awesome transmission centre.
i know the toyota dealer i worked for was sending the entire vehicle to these places.
sometimes they were so busy, you couldn't book it in with them for a week or two,
            so 3 weeks sounds correct.

G'day Albert - good to see you haven't completely lost your sense of humour.

I can think of two things that were out of the ordinary before my transmission failed. Firstly, most of that morning I was driving in rocky, hilly country, very slowly (15kph max)- every now and then the motor would over-rev slightly when changing up from 1st to 2nd. There was a distinct blip on the taco, as though I had hit neutral too long for the auto box. Secondly, there was a fair bit of wheel spin, a lot of revs and a truck load of bad language going up Dingo Hill.

The next day involved normal road speeds on the tar and some good dirt roads. The motor was over reving on changing up from 1st and 2nd. Late afternoon the dash lights came on, the transmission would not change up from 3rd to 4th, and I called the RACV.

Had a scenic trip home on the back of a tilt tray. A real PITA.

Again - good luck. With this modern gear we are totally in the care of other people when something major goes wrong.
