  • Front end driveline rattle under load **Sound file added**

    Hey Guys,

I've done a search for this topic but can't find what I'm looking for.

I have an annoying driveline rattle that developed after our cape trip but I've been too lazy to have it seen to.

It appears under load, low in the rev range and sounds like there's a bucket of nuts and bolts going round in the driveline somewhere up the front. It does it in hi and lo range and drops away around 1500 rpm. The only way I could replicate it tonight at the dealer was to let it idle in 1st and reverse. The dealer thinks this is normal for a toyota! But it gets a lot louder than what he heard, especially in low range.

It sounds just like the old 4.2L diesels do under load! It's hard to explain, all I know is it sounds like a bloody tractor! And no it's not the engine... Thats getting looked at too.

Any thoughts would be much appeciated... Apologies in advance TP if it's been covered.

    Cheers,

    Crammy

This'll probably sound stupid but could it be something caught up between the bash plates and engine / tranny? I did some mud bashing yesterday and today have some rattles at certain engine revs. I'm sure its just due to the mud drying inside the bashplate.

Could be worth a look if you run out of ideas?

Yeah, mine used to get rocks in there or the stupid mesh bits in the plate used to rattle. Just the harmonics of the motor at certain revs/load. Thats my story, hope it helps!

Thanks for the tips guys. My bashplates haven't been taken off for a while but the noise was still there when they were clean.. Having said that I haven't driven with them off to see if the noise is still there.

I'll whip them off on the weekend and see how it goes.

        Cheers fellas 8)

The guys have some good ideas so I wont elaborate, take the mechanic for a drive on some grass in low range we have plenty of it.
Also get them to inspect the tension on the drive shafts universal joint fasteners which is would you believe a 10,000km service check point.
Too hard to tell without listening otherwise.
PM me if you want to do a comparison with my truck as I have a 6spd M and also give me a listen

Thanks for the offer Clifton. I may have to take you up on that offer at some stage and I'd also like to have a listen to your D4D on cold start.

My M6 SS had the same driveline noise but not as bad as the Prado. All I can describe the noise as is that the gears are loosely meshing together at low revs... Other than that I have no idea!

haha yeah mate, the poor old girl is feeling the heat at the moment. She's needs a little TLC thats for sure!

Anyway I've attached a sound file. I managed to capture it tonight in an alley way so it's easy to hear. I put in in low range which is where it's at it's loudest. Id be interested to see if any other guys rigs sound the same.

                    Crammy,
That sound a lot like my old Fordson tractor ... just before it died! Never did find out what was wrong.
The sound recording is good quality, hopefully you will get some action!
                    Cheers
