  • My little stick is vibrating

    Searched without luck

My low range gear lever vibrates so much when I am in normal drive on HH I am wondering if this is normal

If you put your hand on it the vibrations are quite violent - is this normal?

It isn't uheard of in older Toyota's A Super. I do recall some discussion about some stubby vibration a while back but I'm sorry I cannot locate the thread. Mine is dead silent and hardly vibrates at all. If it's really going off the planet then I'd say no it isn't normal at all. Stubby levers, for whatever reason do seem to have a history of noise making, but in modern 4WD's I really haven't heard much about this issue. Certainly our old FJ55 used to have this problem on and off but geez that's a while ago now. On something like the current Prado it really shouldn't be too much of a problem. Just my non-expert thoughts though.

Are you talking about a really bad wobble or a bad vibration that can be felt when you touch it while moving?

I assume you've tried mucking with the lever to make sure it's in the correct position, and not between positions or something like that.

      Thanks for the response IP

As I only use the low range every few months its something that I haven't noticed before and can't say if its changed since new (06)

Its a definite vibration that occurs when we are moving - not at rest-would seem abnormal to the unqualified which is so great about this forum as you can ask and receive the best advice

Stick is in the right position and have moved it thru the gears as I have read about windup etc on the forum?

      Regards AS

No vibrations in mine whatsoever - not in HL (High range Locked centre diff), not in LL (Low range Locked centre diff) and certainly no vibration in HH where nothing should be under any load - I'm no mechanic so hopefully someone with more knowledge can offer some advice; for me, I'd be getting it checked out ASAP under warranty.
        Cheers

There should be no visable vibration, but at idle if you put your hand on the H/L shifter you should feel a deffinite vibration. This smooths out under movement/load.

No that is normal, they all vibrate as the stick goes straight into the gearbox, don't every hang a plastic bag over the stcik it will annoy the Sh#t out of you. All normal.

How much of a vibration is normal though? If I put my hand on mine at idle I can feel a definite vibration running up through it. With diesels though, vibration is nothing new. Definitely smooths out as I get going into hardly anything at all. If it's vibrating badly then I still say it shouldn't do that. I suppose though we all have different ideas on what a bad vibration might be. If you came from an old FJ with 700,000 on the clock doubtless you might have different ideas than someone coming from something more modern. I think I'd be inclined to have someone check it, if only for peace of mind.

I have 2005 5 speed auto GLX. The transfer lever vibrates at about 1000 to 1100 rpm. The plastic bag hanging on the lever does vibrate and create a noise. Yes it is annoying and Toyota did say it was "normal"

I have a 2005 GLX 4.0 V6 and had not noticed any vibration. After reading this topic I checked the other day and felt a definite vibration when idling. No bags shaking, no noise, and not visible. No worries (as far as I'm concerned).

I grabbed hold of the lever at idle yesterday and noticed that it does in fact vibrate. It's not at all visible but it can be felt. My previous comment was clearly incorrect. Sorry! ops:

Prado 2004 4 speed Auto Yes mine also has a harsh vibration under load,
and Toyota also said this was normal,Prado's are built to a Lexus spec for
overseas market, this does seem to be a common thing, but after lots of
off road and beach driving all seems OK..no problem Yet !!
