Transfer case failure maybe ?

Sounds like the Transfer was in Nuetral? Linkage or something maybe?

Sounds similar to a problem my father inlaw had recently. He was towing a fully loaded trailer down a steep decline otw to his property when he lost all gears. So he had to march a few kms to get the backhoe and tow it the rest of the way. Pulled the transfer out and found it was a $6- split ring that had broken.
