  • difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

Anyone else have difficulty selecting gears. we experience this more so when box is cold although is still tight when warm. I would have thought it should have loosened up a bit after 12 months. Have even changed the oil.

    Cheers

No problems here... the only difficulty is getting used to pushing the stick far left and up to select reverse, and also remembering that I've got a 6th gear for cruising! 8)

Yeah we have dramas with getting in to 3rd gear on both upshifts and down. Doesn't seem to matter whether hot or cold.

You have to just let it go in when it feels like it without forcing it... Kind of like the syncros (spelling) are having a lazy day. When shifting in it's like there's no gear there then pops in a second later and you're away. I'm used to it now but when the missus drives, the gear box reverts to a 5spd!

      Cheers,

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

I just got rid of a 12/07 with 80K on the clock, the new one does it as well, it doesn't seem to like as quick a change from 2nd to 3rd, as the synchro catches.

The old hiluxs had a similar thing.

the other problem is rocking the car from 1st to Revs in a bog or rock hopping. Seems to be worse If you get all the wheel spinning at different rates, reverse is a bugger to catch.

Have you tried double declutching shifting down into third, and does it help?

Ours seems fine so far, but still less than 100km on the clock...

            Hi Steve and Sandra,
I have experienced the slow syncro experience as crammy described but the box is pretty good compared with other 4WD manuals I have driven over the years.
It is very interesting double d clutching a manual D4D as the engine response is purposely delayed by the ECU so it is difficult to blip the throttle through the change,I have found,I use this technique when towing the boat downhill by habit.

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

It's interesting to read this thread as I've been having some issues with my box too. Nothing major though. Sometimes when I've just reversed out of a driveway and go to select first gear, it wont go in. At first I thought I was going over too far towards reverse when trying to get first and that was making it stick. But you need a decent shove to get reverse with my box as I think you guys probably do too. After it happened a few times and I more carefully tried selecting 1st It seemed the box was sticking somehow. Sometimes I can get it to go with a little more pressure but you can certainly feel a bit of a graunch in the system when you do that. Also going back from 3rd to second can stick a bit too for me. Not a lot but every now and again. I've just put it down to the new manual box up till this point and will see how it goes. Only done 13,000 with it so far. Not sure how you'd go double clutching as mine seems to take a long time for the revs to come off when you take your foot of the gas. I suppose you could do a much slower double clutch but that's not much help when you need 2nd right now.

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

There is no real fault with mine, just an annoying 1/4 second early grab into gear (I guess would best describe it).

Once stopped I have a bad habit of sitting in neutral, then shoving it into 2nd then into 1st and taking off. I habit from driving a crash gearboxed Series 1 landrovers around for tooooooo loooooonnnnng

The only other issue is R to 1st but this is probably more to do with me demanding quicker response than could be expected out of the box

                  Hi Guys,
Maybe we all need to get more Km's on the clock and see how they perform, a week or so ago I was driving my mates 80 Series cruiser around and I must say our 6 Speed boxes are beautiful in comparison .

Re: difficulty selecting gears. 6spd manual

Is the quality of shift better or worse in LOW range? I have found with other makes of 4x4s that I can "feel" the gears in low range more than I can in high range.

Mine's great at any time. No problems with the box at all. Just beats the synchros occasionally when grabbing low 1st in a hurry.

Can't say I noticed any more resistance in LL. Sadly it's been a little while since I used LL but when I did last I don't remember having an issue. Old Lux used to complain a little but heck it got me where I wanted to go!

                          NO PROBLEM WITH M6 GEARBOX

Just in case any new/potential buyers are reading this thread I think we need to clarify there are no major issues with the 6 speed box !!!!

Some of the threads on here seem to get a life of their own and often get blown way out of proportion.

From my experience and it seems many others, toyota has done a very good job on the prado M6 box, it is far better than any of the competitions trucker style boxes such as the Nissan Patrol.

This gearbox synchro issue is just a very, very, very small idiosyncrasy of the prado and most people would not even notice it. Just a couple of the astute PPers having a chat.

It is a bit like pointing out Elle Macpherson has a mole on her shoulder - In the overall scheme it doesn't effect performance

Heyyyy you're right.... Elle does have a mole on her shoulder.... I'll be damned!!

Yeah it's a good point to make Spurio. I think we started a few too many alarm bells ringing with that whole knock in the diesel engines issue. An issue to be sure but not a cancer affecting every single diesel vehicle on the production line. People must realise that forums naturally attract people discussing issues with their vehicles. Not to be confused with "every vehicle has this issue". I'd like to drive another manual Prado and see how the gearbox feels in that. I think sometimes you develop habits that you really aren't aware of and you begin to think that there's a problem somewhere. I am human, I have errors.
