Has anyone extended the gearbox breather to a higher point in the engine bay?

On my to-do list, along with breathers for the transfer case.

Did the front and rear diffs ... and had a look at the tranny breater while I was in there ... BUT ....

It looks like it sits up on top of the bell housing ... between the bell housing and the firewall .... and is an absolute proverbial to get to.

I've left it on the list of things to do .. when I can figure out how to get to it.

Sorry ... not a lot of use.

          Cheers

The breather behind the bell housing is for the transfer case. The manual gearbox breather is best accessed from inside the car by removing the center console and rubber boot around the gear stick. The breather is on top of the box just behind the gear stick.

I did mine last week. It turned out harder than I first thought as there are two breathers. The breather for the transfer case is easy, but the breather for the transmission is tighter for space and access. It's still do-able. Refer the thread "D4D Auto Transmission Breather" in this section.

I did mine on the weekend - what a crappy task that is. You need patience, problem-solving skills, long thin arms (Arnie would have no chance!), a good sense of touch and a great imagination (Because you can't see a thing!). Oh, and a cold car - couldn't be done if she'd been recently running - ouch. The diffs are easy!

The one I found is on top of the transmission between the firewall. It was connected to a short piece of hose and has a white plastic push on style cap. The length of hose on mine was much shorter than shown in andrewh's D4D thread. It is barely visible via the engine bay and certainly not accessible.
Maybe it's a 2003 thing and they improved it later?

I only found one breather and managed to get that extended, but now am wondering if there is another in some other impossible location.

My question is... anyone know (or guess) whether there are one or two trannie/transfer breathers on the old 3L TD auto?

                Cheers
