  • Rear end groan

Just noticed a slight groan from the rear end (diff) when doing tight turns at low speed, eg turning into parking bay on sealed pavement.
Reminds me a bit like a car with a rear locker diff. I know the Prado has a LSD rear but haven't picked up the noise with my old 90 series.

You haven't loaded it up with a fair amount of wheel spin and all of sudden gotten traction have u? The Rear diffs in just about all toyotas are prone to letting go if abused/pushed hard.

Nah. Haven't had a need to thrash it in any manner. It hasn't been given any stick or subjected to anything harsh. I just like cruising gently and trying to keep the L/100km down as much as possible.

If I want to give it curry I'll drive my Cobra!

Bushbasher I've noticed the same groaning noise on my GXL D4D when turning sharply or doing a uwie . I reckon it's the LSD .

            Problem solved.

Took car in for 10,000km service and service rep asks if I have any issues with the car. Only 1, I said, there's a bit of a groan from the rear end when turning sharply at slow speed. I thought it might just be the LSD but my 90 series never made any groans like this.

Picked the car up and asked if they managed to find the problem. Rep says the diff oil was a little "burnt". According to him Toyota puts in some kind of lubricant to aid in bedding in of the diff gears. They simply drained and replaced the oil.

Now, if I hadn't of mentioned the noise would they have changed the oil? There is nothing in the service manual to reflect replacing the diff oil at the first service.

The noise has gone but I don't know about a running in oil.

              Re: Rear end groan

Local mechanic and authorised factory repairer for all the major marques, including Toyota, says he has never heard of a running in oil for diffs. And he is surprised that if there was a need to change the diff oil so soon (it's was groaning before 10,000km) then there should be a mention of it in the service manual.

Sometimes you have to really wonder if these dealers know what they are doing.

I still get under the car after a service and make sure the sump plug is tightened, check the oil level after a change, etc.

                Re: Rear end groan

Only just found this thread, and can share some experiences with Slippery Diffs squawking on various model low km cars. It happened on one of my Commodores at low kms, and had to change the oil to stop it. When I changed the oil, it didnt ever happened again.
Remember it happening on a couple of passenger and light commercial vehicles when I was on the tools about 10 yrs ago. Changed the oil - fixed
Not sure if its the oil quality, just new LSD friction pads breaking down the oil quicker, the type of driving, or a combination of all :?:
I would have thought this problem would have disappeared with the development of better oils over the years.

Dont know if this helps with understanding this problem

                Slightly off topic
Those who have worked on earthmoving machinary with inboard (wet) brakes will most likely have experienced brake squawk, requiring anti-squawk additives. This was in early days of wet disc brakes, when the brake packs chattered after genuine oil removed at 1st service, or if new packs hadnt been soaked properly during a rebuild.
                Cheers

                  Re: Rear end groan

Had a noise like the handbrake still on when turning sharp after vehicle warmed up also a small shudder when reversing out of the garage, this happened at about 43000 kms. Returned prado to bundaberg dealer where they said LSD clutch plates to tight and there have been a few with this problem, they tried to get out of it by saying wrong oil had been put in diff at 40000km service ,but when i said bull i had proof that LSX 90 had been used Prado was booked in for repairs that took about a week to be done ,done about 8000 km since and seems to be good now
