Hi any tips when towing with an Auto Tran D4D 07
Jayco Eagle outback 1080KG
I have towed a 1250kg Coromal Pioneer Silhouette 421 camper for more than 3200km without any problems with the auto transmission. I am due to have the transmission serviced in the next few weeks but I doubt I will bother putting in a separate transmission cooler.

Hi philf63,
We have had our outback Eagle for about 3 years and travelled extensively. Ours is the old 3.0TD, (but with a DP Chip), and to be honest, unless necessary, I just leave it in Drive. Some consistant, long hills may require you to knock it back a gear, but unless you are off road, I let the Prado choose the gear...... never had any problems at all.
Ours is a petrol and our camper is a Goldstream (heavier than your Eagle) but have towed it over 25,000kms with no known ill effects.
Like above, I just leave it in D and let it sort it out with the occasional manual override if the terrain changes. If it is having a merry time changing up and down between 4th and 5th I'll flick it into 4th and leave it there until the road changes. Wouldn't have thought the D4D would need that due to engine characteristics.
I just leave it in D for Drag. Unless I am towing up somewhere like Cunninghams Gap then I will select a lower gear.

Are refering to stress on the transmission when in towing top gear, rather than vehicle performance?

So Rob, do you have an external tranny cooler fitted? I think I am going to need one of those DP Chips too.
I very much doubt you will need a transmission cooler (I don't have one) and have not been in a situation where I thought it necessary.
But I certianly installed my DP Chip primarily for towing.
Jayco quote my Eagle (2004) as around 1150kg...... but by the time you fill the water tank, put a couple of jerry cans on the draw bar, stock it with food and supplies and the wife then fills the camper with enough of her stuff to leave home for ever  ..... I reckon I'm often pulling more like 2000kg.... and the DP Chip just made it less embarrassing on a couple of those long slow hills
Still not the pulling grunt of the petrol on the hills, but the old diesel will just go all day and I'm never in a rush when touring
