  • Clutch failure and preceeding signs.

    Hi

I have just picked my prado up from the mechanic, after the clutch catastrophically failed.
Just driving on a road, got to a steeper bit and bag... crunchity chunch whin..n..n..n..ne. Stop.
    Not going anywhere...

When I looked back to reverse the car behind was already reverseing, so it must have sounded
    bad from the outside. ops:

Ok, so what happened was on the clutch plate (sorry I don't know the proper terms) the centre
bit that drives the gearbox was no longer connected via the springs to the friction plate.
Effectively like spinning a CD on your finger.

Anyhow, to the important bit... the signs of impending doom....
The car was like this for 6 months plus... in hindsight.

    * Take off seemed spongy... it would engage properly but it felt like it would take off on a rubber band.
    * Letting out the clutch in neutral caused a rattle. (Obviously broken clutch bits shaking around.)

I knew the clutch due to be replaced, but it wasn't slipping at all, so I thought it would last another 6 - 12 months.
    Guess I was wrong.

FYI, Whole job was $1100. $400 labor, the rest parts.
2004 GX TD; Some extra stuff... and a big wish list...
Working...
