I have an Oct 08 build Jan 09 plated GXL auto Prado and I seem to have some play in the drive shaft. It is my first auto, so perhaps it is normal. If I put it in second and drive at ~2000rpm and go on and off the throttle, when it goes from accelerating to engine braking there is a thump. Go from braking to acceleration it happens again. I imagine it would happen if there was play between the gears or something. It is like the tail shaft thump that has been wideltt reported (which I also had, and had it regreased). Had the dealer look at it an they said it was normal. It can also occur when the box changes up a gear and you take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Is it normal? Or should I persue the dealer for a fix.

Can't say that I have ever experienced that particular issue but I am going to go outside and give it a go. My GXL is also my first auto 4wd and it's off-road ability and smoothness still impresses me. I've done nearly 20,000 since getting it in January and almost 2/3 of this has been off the black top.

I'll see what happens and report back asap.

Just been out and tried everything but no clunking sounds. Goes well in all gears, on and off the throttle as you described.

There are other posts which describe a clunking sound from main driveshaft which has been replaced under warranty with some cars.

Thanks Bushbasher. I've been through the tail shaft regrease to get rid of the thump on stopping. WIll try again with another dealer.
