  • Clutch shudder from about 10,000km in manual D4D

Hi all. I note a couple of other threads about people with clutch problems, and thought I would post my experience here to see if anyone has seen anything similar, or has any suggestions.

In a nutshell: Our late 2007 D4D 6 spd manual has had the clutch replaced and flywheel machined at about 30,000km, but is now shuddering slightly again.

The longer version includes the fact that our clutch was heavy and shuddered for over a year before the local Toyota service agent admitted it was faulty, even when asked repeatedly to assess it. In fact, we had to go to a different dealer (although the same parent company owns all three dealers here in Canberra) before they admitted a problem. We didn't have enough experience to press the point, and the problem had appeared gradually. We don't tow and in fact don't take the car off road much at all (to my great embarrassment!)

Once the clutch was replaced, it felt like a completely new car. But...that only lasted a couple of weeks. Although much better than before, the clutch now has a slight but noticeable shudder especially on hill starts.

I've contacted Toyota Corporate, and will be taking the car into the dealer next week for assessment, but would love to hear from anyone else experiencing this problem. Obviously not including those smart alecs who bought automatics and know the solution!

    Thanks.

Hi Ivan, welcome to the forum. I wish I had some news or some helpful advice but I really don't have anything worthwhile (I actually have an auto). I just wanted to say.....

Good luck re the dealer. I haven't had much luck since telling them about my increasing fuel consumption figures (but then again I keep adding accessories onto it).
Im not getting close to what I should be and I hope its not injector related. At every service Ill mention my issue and get them to note it on the service report incase there are any problems in the future.

I hate to ask this but does the better half ride the clutch...mistakingly???? Or do you have a steep driveway and someone stops at the bottom to get the mail and then reves it up and may ride the clutch a little? Or it could be a that the fly wheel may not have been machined properly or not at all and it was still glazed from the last failure. Just trying to help out...I do have an auto but I also have had plenty of manuals in the past and some of these have come up before. ops:

Don't these 120's have a dual mass flywheel?? I am not sure.

Your dealer is bullsh**!ng you big time if he says he had a DM flywheel "machined".
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

No, although I cringe a little at the slightly rougher handling of the clutch that my wife dishes out, she definitely doesn't ride it, we have a completely flat driveway, and we live in a pretty flat part of town too. So I'm fairly sure we haven't damaged the clutch through misuse, although I certainly did consider that possibility. And of course with the shudder, you do have to slip the clutch a bit more to get a non-kangaroo hop start up, so that isn't really helping.

Dunno about "dual mass flywheels"...perhaps someone else can comment on that one.

Thanks for the responses so far.
