Re: Loose drive when wheel is in air

try a simple test hassro, find a little mound/rut that will lift a wheel, pull the transfer leaver into 4hi to lock centre diff, drive throught the rutt/hill until you lift a wheel, if you stop foward travel for a second or 2 and you here a groaning noise and the car wants to go foward, thsi noise will be the brakes grabbing, eg traction control, but i think in the when you select lowrange you should get a light on the dash thats says says trc off or tc off, not sure as my model dosent have traction control. hope this helps. cheers samo
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

Pretty sure 2003 120 Grandes had traction control.
See an old article here http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/ne ... _prado.htm
As said you'll know when TC is "active" by a slight "purring" noise coming from the engine bay in front of the driver's position. This is the ABS modulator doing it's thing.
Over the years the TC software coding will have been improved, which may explain why the 150 did better ( could be a number of other reasons too  )

On the tyres, 38 PSI is way too high for most offroad work. Try down around 28 or lower if muddy.
      Cheers, Wayne

Re: Loose drive when wheel is in air

        Hi Ty,

As GeeBee has mentioned before, If you engaged HL (High-Low - Centre Diff Locked), probably best done before tackling that slope (specially on any loose surface), you would have made it. If you engage HL after getting stuck - it may NOT engage the Centre Diff Lock straight away ( as was also mentioned before ). The rear should have an LSD, so the rear wheel (that is NOT in the air) should still be turning ( but maybe turning on the loose gravel ). On HH, drive gets distributed back-to-front and vice versa, but NEVER 100% - so your front wheels should still be turning. I have found that the OE tyres are useless ( @ 25,000 km's: NOT sure If you have changed the tyres on your Prado), I have changed to Pirelli Scorpion ATR's and have never had any issues with getting traction since ( even at 40 psi: on loose gravel, rocky terrain, & mud ). The OE Suspension was also too soft ( which also contributes a bit to loss of traction ), so I replaced them with a Tough Dog 2in lift kit suspension system. This ensured that the stiffer springs and adjustable suspension helped push the tyres harder onto the ground - improving traction greatly. The change of tyre's & suspension were expensive, but worth every penny when venturing off-road. Hope this helps a little. By the way, SORRY for the late reply ( ONLY just started reading and getting involved with the discussions ).

        Cheers,

        Noel

Thanks good article I knew tyres were over inflated I had forgot to let some air out before the training day and did let some out while there but no where near enough ops: plus front tyres Grandcraps only have about 5% tread left so I need to replace tyres. I need to view car from outside as you can see on other cars the free wheel being braked next time will get someone else to drive it to see.
