Vibration/Shudder at 60-80kmph
Just like everyone else I have tried the spark plugs, coil pack, fuel filter and still no good. Have had the car in the shop 3 times now and getting very frustrated. Hoody how did you go with the drive shafts, have you had them fixed yet? I think it's a balance issue also as it's only between 60-80kmph uphill and in 3rd gear (I think). Other than that the car is perfect but just bloody annoying! Haven't paid anything yet because they haven't been able to fix it but thinking it could be pricey. Will have them have a look at the drive shaft.
[QUOTE=Hoody;506325]well Sunny is spot on.
I just got it back from the 4th mechanic - 2 x Toyota mech's said it was fuel related, 3rd mech said it was transmission - well the 4th has nailed it - its drive shafts. known as driveline vibration.
I have 2 x worn front drive shafts and there is some play in the universal joints. its totally safe to drive but will need to be fixed of course. it took him less than an hour with the car on the hoist to diagnose.
they propose to recondition the drive shafts, possibly replace the uni's (wont know until they pull the thing apart if the unis are shot), and balance the tail shaft.
it cost me $1k to date for wrong diagnosis, and as mentioned above, 4 different mechanics. no idea what it will actually cost to fix, however now I finally know what is wrong with it, and feel safe to drive it. after I get back from holidays it will go in to be fixed.

Hey Lazer,
Great investigating!
So how can you tell it is worn drive shafts without pulling them out and visually inspecting them?
Are you talking about worn splines on the shafts??
Hope your Prado drives vibration free after the fix!

Hi, it was very interesting reading about your problems. I have a 2006 Prado 120 4.0l V6 auto with the same. On idling in top gear with my foot on the brake, it starts shaking. At this stage the revs are @ about 500. When driving in town, @ between 1100 and 1200 rpm and between 60 and 70kph in top gear, it also gets the shakes. gearing down to 4th gear, the shakes are gone.
I've balanced wheels, replaced universal joints and central bearing, re-greased the cv's on the front drive shafts and replaced the gearbox oil. O yes, I've also had the shocks tested. It's still the same. The next option would be replacement of the torque converter. This is quite costly and I don't want to do this and find that the problem still persists.
Any other suggestions? I've followed Whitey's problem with great interest.
It's just a pain in the back side to realize that the same problem occurs both in Australia and South Africa and that Toyota is not doing anything about it.

Hey all,
I can say after the best part of 6 years, this vibration is still a mystery and the source remains unknown!

It can just be from perished oil not sure about Prado transmission but they say some transmissions these days are sealed for life but it is not true. Depending on a cars life the oil can perish a lot faster e.g. heavy towing/heat etc... First step should be getting your transmission fluid changed/flushed by a place that knows the transmission.
Then just see how you go if it returns its time for a new torque convertor and reconditioned trans or review how much you like the car. Some places will replace just the TC but if your paying for all that labor you may as well get the trans reconditioned because having to pay twice for that labor is a bad decision.
If it is your TC the longer you leave it the more damage it will do to your transmission. I should add by changing the fluid too late it can actually bring about transmission failure sooner if the transmission is already too far gone. Transmission oil changes are best done as preventative measure every 85,000km or so. Once it shudders its kind of too late the oil is generating too much heat and has started damaging components/glazing the TC clutch.
You will know this because a short period after the flush it will start shuddering again or the shudder/slip will still be evident if only slightly improved.
The more I read about this the more I realized it affects lots of other big 4WD's commonly used for towing.
Hope this helps and my pain is your gain...Last edited by Fredbloggs; 18-12-2015, 03:40 PM.

Hey Fred,
Interesting point!
I've flushed my transmission oil many times, and I still have the shudder.
What damage do you believe will be done?

Maybe an answer from Canada/US?

Best,

Thanks for your efforts...as suspected, it was not wheel, tire, balance, or alignment related. The vibration I was concerned about manifested 2 ways. There was a noticible vibration through the vehicle, but it was most noticable through the passenger seat belt where it attaches to the center floorpan. My wife would often feel different levels of vibration through the locking mechanism. The 2nd symptom was a "droning" noise or hum coming from the engine compartment. This would come and go depending on speed, gear, load, etc. It always coincided with the vibration. My dealer changed all four engine mounts 2 weeks ago. This reduced the vibration by about 15%, but did not solve the droning noise or eliminate the vibration. They then agreed that the problem was not resolved and did some further research. There is a TSB for "engine drone" while in gear but idle. This did not apply to me, as my drone was not at idle, but they tried the fix none the less. The fix invloves removing a rubber bushing on an exhaust system mounting bracket. Once they removed the bushing, the drone and vibration stopped! So, it was RPM and resonance related.
I am now very happy with the results.

Ok so as a mechanic and owner of an 08 gjr120 this vibration got to me and I had to find out what it was.
After a lot of test drives, a lot of thinking reading and a few phone calls to a reputable trans shop I have come to the conclusion that it is the lock up clutch in the torque converter.
When the trans ecu decides it can use top gear to lessen the load on the engine, the clutch locks up giving a 1-1 drive which is better for fuel economy. But the clutch is slipping therefore getting the shudder/vibration until it decides to shift down a gear or you select it manually.
Lucky for me the guy I bought it from regularly sell prados so I get to swap my trans out with one from a lower mileage and unaffected Prado. Which is a lot better than paying 4400 trade price for s rebuild
Until then I have to select 4th when she starts doing it...and as soon as I get this swap done I'll post results

It seems plausible, and as Fred discussed above, he also believes the transmission is the source. I haven't investigated the exhaust mounts yet as discussed above.
For anyone still reading and pondering about this, there is some discussion of clutch slip here;
http://www.bankspower.com/techarticl...s-Diesel-Tough
I'll be keen to hear if you have success with a lower km transmission.
I've done 75,000 hard kilometres on my Prado since I bought it second hand, and the vibration has not gone away, but nor has it gotten worse. I've just ticked over 150,000km, and I'm confident it will do another 150,000km with the vibration still there.
If the clutch is worn from this ecu/rpm top gear hunting, shouldn't we see slipping starting to occur under different conditions other than the slight incline and 60km/h conditions that most have observed it???
Why does this occur only for some Prados and not all???
It's great to have a mechanic who is interested in this issue, and I hope you come up with some hardcore evidence!
How many km's do you have on your 08?
