  • Gearbox Issues

    Hi,

I have a 2006 Prado with a problem in first gear, does anyone know who the best person in Perth WA is to get this fixed - I'm reluctant to take it to a dealership.

    Thanks

      Re: Gearbox Issues

Hi Mick, thanks for the reply sorry for the delay in responding I hadn't checked the post for a while.

My problem seems to be the clutch / drive train, it's a 6 speed manual (2006 3ltr diesel). I was having clutch problems so Toyota put a new one in it saying there were high spots, however, I still don't like the way power is transferred through the clutch in first gear. I can feel it engaging but when the revs are around 2000 it feels like it's slipping but not smoothly like little 'bites' are being made similar to what I would expect if there were still high spots on the clutch.

Although I can pretty much dump the clutch without it slipping the problems are when I'm in difficult terrain first gear and bogged, when I apply the clutch the little bites seems to shake/shudder the whole car - when the revs are about 2000.

Also when engaging in first gear there doesn't seem to be consistency when releasing the clutch, I can feel it engaging for a while then at a point it engages quite quickly. I've had many manuals before but never problems like these.

      What do you think?

      Thanks for your help.

      Ben

        Re: Gearbox Issues

Sounds the fly wheel was not machined correctly or not machined at all to result in " clutch shudder " , have a talk to Bill at Hi - Tech Brake & Clutch -Wangara 9309 4466 . I have nothing to do with company at all , known the bloke for 15 + years and he seems to know what he is on about . In saying this he may ask you to bring it in to have a propper look were as the place you took it too originally should remove gear box to get to the fly wheel at there expence may be you may have to pay for machining of fly wheel which i can not imagine being more than $60.00 , thats if they had not done it in the first place . I have witnessed a lot of mechanics just using a scotch pad attached to an air drill and roughing the surface I dont agree this is the rite way to do it , but I am no mechanic
