  • In gear, car won't go !

    Hey Pradopointers,

Had a problem today, went to back the Prado out of the garage, stuck it in reverse in the auto, and the car wouldn't reverse, just rocked slightly under acceleration, tried it in drive, same problem. Handbrake was clearly off after I got out and looked under the car.

I put the car into low range, and still the same problems.

I tried accelerating harder in low range, and then there was a big mechanical clunk noise, and hey presto, everything worked again.

My car is an 06 5spd auto V6, I bought it second hand with 88k on it.

I'm thinking it might be time to drop the gearbox oil out, as it seems like something is not getting lubricated properly and getting stuck.

Anybody got a clue what was locked up ??

You didn't just wash it/ get it very wet?

Mine does a very similar thing if I wash it and put it away wet, every time without fail. Not to the extent of having to put it in low range, but it lets out a loud clunk and takes a bit of clutch/revs to first move.

I've always put it down to me getting water in the brakes with the pressure cleaner and them sticking a little.

      Hey Mick,

The answer is yes ! I washed it on Sunday, plenty of water in the wheel area, and put it straight away in the garage !

Ok, so then you reckon the brakes are locking up, the clunk I heard was so loud I nearly p..ped my pants thinking something had let go in the gearbox.

...didn't think such a loud clunking sound could come from the brakes !

Phew, I'll go and relax now !

Thanks again Mick, you are a genuine fountain of knowledge !

Hi Whitey. Common problem with Prado's. My 95 does the same thing when the shoes have been wet. It feels like the shoes have vulcanised themselves to the drums. Mine lets out a hell of a bang sometimes when it releases. All good though. Just one of those charming little foibles. 30/5/2010 Update - found that rear axle seals had weeped onto shoes making them tacky! $475-00 NZ to have the job done (new shoes and seals). Made my eyes water somewhat. Got shoe part nos from MickL on another thread. Cheers.

Had it happen to me, washed the 2005 Prado 120 Saturday morning, parked it and did not need to drive again until Tuesday morning. It would not go. Jacked up the rear diff, pushed Prado on trolley jack front wheels turned fine.
Grabbed Passenger side rear wheel and it turned. Grabbed Drivers side rear wheel and it would not turn, got hammer and bashed around drum brake area, still no movement, carefully sprayed WD40 in selected spots where metal on metal and surface rust was evident, bashed more with hammer and wheel then free-ed up and turned. Prado now driving again. So the moral of the story is always take Prado for a short drive after washing the car!!!

Happened to my 05 120 too. Parked the car in the garage straight after washing. The first time it happened I knew it was the brakes sticking by the noise they made when they released, just never experienced it before. All the years doing the same with my 90 I never had that happen before. After washing the car once it did it for two mornings after a drive to & from work in between. Strange phenomenon.
