  • How Slow in Overdrive

Had the 07 Prado a couple weeks now. Auto it is. I find the car drops into overdrive at around 60 odd KPH. Seems to me that the motor lugs a bit at that speed so I generally drop it manually back to 4th. This is round town where I have a 60 limit.

But this is my first diesel. So I am treating the rev issue from a petrol background. I know the diesels seem to be fairly happy chugging along a bit - I guess what I would consider "labouring" in a petrol motor. So for those with the new model - do you just let it chugg or do you change back as I do ??

i've got the old diesel, in a 5spd manual. i used to get into 5th and cruise whereever possible but found it a little sluggish so i now stick to 4th until about 70. found i use a little less gas with this approach too...

      Gunna,
Let it chugg, lots of torque and with the automatic the gearbox it will sort out any labouring problems, believe me when you calculate your fuel consumption you will be more than happy.

      Enjoy your new toy,

Sorry I forgot to mention I also have one of those oil burning D4D Automatic versions of which is still happily running around on Dunlop Grandtrak AT20s.

I also do what Fazza does. I let the gearbox to sort out all the problems with gear selection. When load will be too great the box will downshift to forth.

I have manual, put it into 5th at 70kph and 6th at 90 kph, it seems happy to cruise along at 1600rpm.
            Cheers Phil.

I also let the auto 'box sort things itself unless I need engine braking.

Watching the fuel flow rates on the ScanGauge reveals there is a definite advantage using top gear - even in the petrol donk.

              Hope this helps,

              Drew.

I have the v6 with the 6 speed , I don't use it around town (okay maybe sometimes in a 80 zone) . One the highway it's great after 100k up ... on the overtaking lane I'll pass in 6th gear , for a quick pass I go back to 5th or 4th .

                cheers
