Won't work unless you tap the brakes to initiate it. For uphill, you must blip the throttle to downshift. Once it's downshifted, it will maintain gear and speed.

ALSO... A good tip for those that like to use cruise control.

Even though it will maintain the set speed with the cruise control enabled. If you ever find that the cruise control is selecting the wrong gear to hold the speed up hills (eg. 3rd gear at 4500rpm at 110km/h), you can easily overcome this by taking control of the throttle and putting your foot down just enough to maintain speed or speed up ever so slightly so it does not downshift. When the road levels out again, let go of the throttle and cruise control will take over again.

      Cheers

Hmmm intresting! i find my 120 does drop the gears on steep hills when i brake but really only happens on steep hills when i going at quite some pace. i like to use the gear leaver still even when slowing down on flat bits of road etc, coming up to intersections! I have not noticed any thing on the up hill side of things! and to be honest i find when im driving at approx 85km hr on a slight up hill the gearbox will stay in 5th and the engine will start to strugle a bit so i manually drop the auto into 4th! i suppose i could try the blip of the throttle but it seems weird that it wont drop to 4th its self. (i have noticed others on this forum talk about this as well). keep in my i have the 1KD engine and not a V6. i will try the "blip of the throttle a few times and see if that solves the problem.

My Hilux surf has the ECT button which stops the car holding onto the top gear and it seems to split 4th gear in half. I wish my 120 prado had this
