  • 4 speed Auto whine (now NOT the transmission!)

Just back from a long weekend towing the camper up and over the Blue Mountains and back, and noticed this morning there is a noticeable whine - especially when starting off, not so obvious once at driving speed (60km/h in Sydney).

The pitch of the whine changes as the revs change - increases in pitch until the gear change, at which point it drops in pitch, then builds again until the next change. As said, it's definitely more noticeable as you move off from a standing start, and is less obvious once the foot comes off the accelerator a bit.

No other changes that I've noticed - no jerky gear changes, grinding, etc.

I'm expecting it is something to do with the auto transmission rather than the diffs and so on.

Any tranny gurus got some ideas? I don't like the idea of a rebuild of the transmission (haven't even looked at the cost of such as yet - I'd better be sitting down), but if know what it is, then maybe only a partial rebuild is needed (says me with my 'hopeful' hat on.....). If it is the tranny, anyone got any recommendations of places to go (or avoid) in the Hornsby or Macquarie Park (North Ryde) parts of Sydney?

    It's a 2004 Grande V6, just clicked over the 100k mark.

    TIA.

Are you sure its not something like a power steering bearing, A/C pulley etc. Sounds to me like an engine related noise rather than trans. Maybe lift the bonnet and get someone to rev the engine...

      Funny you should mention that!

I spent more time with the window down on the way to work this morning, and also came to the conclusion that the noise was coming more from the front than underneath.

Lifted the bonnet at work and revved the engine, and my first thought was maybe the fan (either the belt, pulley, or viscous coupling, etc.). Don't expect it to be the A/C, as it hasn't been on.

Sound definitely disappears as soon as the foot comes off the accelerator, so I'm now leaning towards the fan area. Will drag a colleague downstair soon to have an ear at the front while the other person hits the gas, and see if we can sort it out.

Check the bolt on the bottom pully/harmonic balancer as they had a tendency to come loose.

          Sorted.

It was the good old pulley bearings - mainly on the A/C, but the other 2 were a bit tight as well. Hopefully being resolved today.

(Thanks must go to Justo for his aftermarket bearing/bush set!!)
