  • Transmission Not Shifring Gear When Warm

I have a problem with my transmission in my diesel where it wont change gear until the revs are up over 3000 and I back off the accelerator. This happens between 20 and 50kms and there is next to no power. This problem only occurs after driving the car for atleast 10 mins. My mechanic has advised me I'm up for a new transmission because the trans cooler has leaked coolant into the transmission. If there is anyone in the know that can please advise if the transmission needs to replaced or can it be fixed for cheaper? I don't want to spend anymore money on this car because I only just replaced the transmission last year for about $3500.

You can try draining the trans and radiator, replacing the radiator and flushing out the trans. Mustie1 has a video of doing that on a 4-runner on Youtube. There is most definitely not a 100% success on that though.

Thanks for that, I'll check it out. I was basically told as soon as coolant gets into the transmission it cactus.

For a few bucks of ATF it's probably worth a try if you DIY but yes I think you're right. You could consider an external oil cooler and bypassing the radiator when you do fix it, I've done that to mine though there are differing opinions on whether or not that's a good idea.
