  • Manual 5spd or 6spd

    gday,
    I'm currently researching and looking for a 2005-07 diesel and was wonder what advanages either gearbox has.
    I gather the 6spd would/maybe better for highway driving?
    Do they also handle a larger tyre?
    Most of the off road work i do we be sand.

    Re: Manual 5spd or 6spd

    The advantage of the 6 speed is that it has the D4D engine attached to it!

    The D4D (1kd-ftv common rail engine) has the RA61F 6 speed manual. It has 5 gear ratios and 1 over drive ratio; 1st to 6th they are 4.171, 2.190,1.488,1.193,1.000 and 0.799

    The older 1kz-te (indirect injection engine) has the R150F box (same as 80 and 100 series diesels, out of interest) It has 4 gear ratios and 1 over drive ratio;
    3.830, 2.062,1.436,1.000 and 0.838

    Buy the D4D/6 speed combo if your budget stretches that far (mind you the 1kz/5 speed isn't a bad combo, just no match for the newer technology in both power torque and economy)

    Both combinations handle a tire size increase without issue. A 265/70/17 fits on standard suspension without rubbing.

    The R150F is rock solid, the RA61F has had some clutch issues on early production vehicles but is generally very solid also.
