  • High/Low Range selector

    Hi Guys,

My mate in Sydney jusy got his new 07 D4D Prado the other day. Being him he took it away this weekend, completed 1300km and burnt 276L, towing a boat, does that consumption seem excessive?

Anyhow he didnt read the owners manual and just noticed that the range selector was in "H" the whole time!

I havent got mine yet, my understanding was that it was supposed to be in"N" whilst on the bitumen..................

Is that right? If so would he have done any damage to the drive line?

    Regards,

    Rob

Hmmm.... I suspect there may have been a miscalculation somewhere on those fuel/distance figures.

He would have to be doing some really serious low-range off-road work to be getting anywhere near that kind of consumption (4.7km/litre = over 20 litres/100km). Either that, or it is a really heavy boat.

Consumption generally does improve slightly as the km's pile on and the engine starts to "free up".

The range selector should be on High for the road. You put it in low range when the going starts to get tough off road.

In Neutral, the car won't go anywhere. I remember when I first discovered this and actually thought the car was cactus and that the driveline had given up the ghost. ops:

    Just my 2 bob's worth...

      Grandeman,

Thanks for the reply. I was unsure havent had had new 4WD before (X-Trail doesnt count) and was unsure where the lever should be positioned.

I got the same result 20L/100 thats double the book figure. The boat is a 4.2m alloy quintrex not sure how much it weighs not that much though.

I agree, it will improve when she loosens up a bit (dont they all). He did mention that he was doing 130K/h towing the boat.

So if the lever is put in N - nuetral the driveline system front and back is completely disengaged?? So if you put the car in gear whilst in nuetral it wont go anywhere?

By the way, I read that you may be looking at getting a new bullbar? Do you still have the over bumper bullbar? Just curious as if you are looking at getting rid of it at the right price, it may do me until I can afford the sovereign.

      Regards,

      Rob.

New car, 130kmh & towing a boat. Hmm, He has a different method on how to run cars in doesn't he?

D4D towing should be doing no more than 12 l per 100.

yeah, obviously didn't read the manual reading the gear levers or the towing recommendations. From memory, the book states not to tow for the 1st 800kms.

The Transfer Lever has 4 positions, H, HL, N and LL (unless it's a Grande which may have some other fancy method). H is normal 'high speed' use, HL is high range locked centre diff (loose surfaces), N Neutral and LL is low range locked.

Book what book? My mate has more money than sense, I say that in a nice way, heart of gold but to him it is just a car nothing else.............

When he took delivery of it, they still hadnt finished all the pre delivery items. Had BFG's fitted from delivery, they werent even balanced or aligned, the front windows were not tinted etc.

He just took the keys and off he went.

Will post some pics of his rig later.

First thing I will do is get the sales guy to go over everything and make sure it is what I have ordered and to my satisfaction BEFORE I take delivery of the vehicle. Aiming for 9.00am 16th May that way if it is not up to standard then they have time to fix it. Otherwise I simply will not drive it out of the dealership.

This is the longest I have ever waited for a car.

            Regards,

            Rob
