    Dennis,

The overheating 5-speed auto and reflash to address the issue is only appliacble to the 150 Prados. There is no issue with the 120 Prados.

120 D4Ds do not have an external transmission oil cooler - they just use the radiator.

Well there you go, learn something new everyday. I didn't even look at his signature to see it was a D4D. ops:

try http://www.derale.com they have a variety of oil coolers , i'm geeting one for my 2006 VX , V6 ,5 speed auto , as last friday i took the car for a spin on sand dunes , temp was 30 , the over heated transmition oil went on 3 times.

i might even go for motor oil cooler and power steering heat sink too.

another company http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/ i didn't tried any of their products before .

            regards

I'm also keen on doing this mod.

I have had a quick look at the PWR oil coolers, only cos they are mentioned in 4WD Action, but I couldn't figure out which one would suit.

An email to them would help...

Otherwise I could find a decent transmission specialist in Perth to fit it...

the diesel 120's weren't fitted with an external trans cooler.
for a diesel, stick with a small or maybe a medium cooler.
you don't want to over cool your auto fluid otherwise it will hold onto gears longer as it thinks it is cold and try's to warm-up.
i have had a meduim fitted for over a year, but my trans feeds direct to external cooler then to vehicle radiator (so it can re-heat if needed). my trans oil temp sits around 60'C at the present (cool air). i have had it at 90'c for about 5min under heavy load, but cools quickly back to 60-70. this is what i wanted it to hover at and it works fine for what i use the prado for.
others that just tow might want a different set-up/workings.
unless you need a cooler, i suggest not, as it's just something else that could go wrong, or if ill-fitted could rub through AC condensor and then $$$.
i also have a small power steer cooler fitted as i have overheated PS twice before. haven't since.

                  Cheers Damonat!

You definitely have provided the other side of the argument.

Over the last while I have continued to read that fitting an auto oil cooler is a must-do mod for auto 4WD's (they keep harping on about it in 4WD Action - I know people have mixed feelings about this mag), so its good to hear other people's opinions.

I don't do any towing, mainly cos I got nothing to tow, other than the odd trailer run. So its good to hear your point of view - very informative.

                    Re: Auto Oil coolers

I put my cooler on about a year ago. It was one I took off my Commodore a few years back. Just an after market one.

I didnt have any trans cooling issues, but the beaches here are quite soft, and I do tow a camper up North occasionally.

The engine does run slightly cooler on the gauge on a long run when towing.

                    http://www.pradopoint.com/viewtopic....&t=3776#p89755

Many a Prado running without coolers, that are towing more than me, and I dont hear of many cooked transmissions or overheating issues. It probably just comes down to personal choice.
                    Cheers
